About Airfix Ships

Airfix might have started out as a model plane maker, but don’t let their name deceive you: their line-up of ships is just as incredible as their aircraft. In this Airfix ships category, we’ve collected many of the models Airfix have made of ocean liners, sailboats and battleships for your perusal.

Before we explore the different Airfix ships in more detail, a word on scale: most Airfix kits range from 1:35 - 1:72 scale, however because of the sheer size of many maritime vessels, this would be impractical for anyone without a spare room to house their model ship inside. That’s why most of the Airfix ships you’ll see here use much smaller scale. 1:180 is common, but the largest ships have been reduced by a factor of 1:600. Despite these smaller scales Airfix have worked hard to recreate the ships in high detail.

Airfix sail and steam ships

Airfix have picked out some of the most famous vessels from antiquity and brought them to life as models! In our digital dockyard you can find wonderous reproductions of elegant ships from the age of sail in this category. Each of the sailboats you’ll see here have a story behind them, whether one of success, like Captain Cook’s globe-navigating Endeavour, or failure, like the ill-fated British flagship, the Mary Rose.

After millennia of ships powered by nothing but the wind and the sweat of rowers, the 19th Century saw the invention of an entirely new kind of vessel, the steamship! You can find many recreations of fine ocean liners and other steam powered vessels in this category. The most infamous maritime disaster of all time, the Titanic, is only one of the huge vessels you can shop for here.

Modern Airfix ships

In addition to Airfix’s selection of ships from the age of sails, you can find many modern vessels in our virtual harbour. These Airfix ships have traded their windsails and coal fires for diesel engines and nuclear reactors, but they’re no less attractive.

Many of the modern Airfix ships are modelled on World War 2 era battleships, which marked the last hurrah of traditional naval combat. You can recreate famous sea battles from WW2 using Airfix’s recreation of legendary juggernauts like the HMS Ark Royal and the Battleship Bismarck.
