What is high-res audio?

"High-resolution audio" and "high-fidelity audio" mean practically the same thing. They refer to music files that have a higher sampling frequency and/or bit depth than is typical of compressed audio formats such as MP3 or AAC. Though the ins and outs of high-res audio can get quite technical, in a simple sense: the more bits there are, the more accurately the audio signal can be received and reproduced (by your soundbar, for example). What attracts music lovers to hi-res audio is that it creates a deeper listening experience, more closely replicating the sound quality that the musicians and producers will have worked with when in the studio.

For a straightforward definition of high-res audio, a group of record labels and consumer electronics companies came together in 2014, as buzz for high-res products began picking up pace, and described it as “lossless audio that is capable of reproducing the full range of sound from recordings that have been mastered from better than CD quality music sources."
