What's a floppy disk?
A floppy disk is a type of disk storage composed of a thin and flexible disk that’s housed inside a square plastic enclosure and lined with a dust-resistant fabric. They were developed by IBM in the late 60s as a cheaper alternative to hard drives and were used by consumers to store and back up their files. Though rarely used nowadays, there are still some die-hard floppy disk fans who look to these retro gizmos for all their storage needs. However, as all the latest computer systems no longer support internal floppy drives, you’ll need to purchase an external storage device accessory, such as a USB floppy drive, if you’re looking to use them.
How do I use a USB floppy drive?
If you’ve dug out all your old floppy disks from the loft and you’re filled with curiosity to discover what’s stored inside, you’re in luck: nowadays, copying the data from a vintage floppy disk to your modern computer is easier than ever – and all you need is a USB floppy drive to do it!
Floppy disks were first introduced as an 8” diskette, followed by a smaller 5.25” design and finally – and most commonly used – a 3.5” disk. If your floppy disks are 3.5” and formatted for MS-DOS or Windows, you’re in luck, as this is by far the easiest format to work with on a modern computer system. To transfer data from your 3.5” floppy disk to your laptop, simply insert the disk into your USB floppy drive, connect that to your laptop and enjoy your practically instant plug-and-play solution – it’s that simple! A word to the wise, however: it’s important to remember that floppy disks are old and therefore unpredictable – you don’t want to risk losing any of your treasured memories if your floppy disk can’t support the USB device, so perhaps test it out on some less-important data first, just in case.
If your floppy disks are 5.25” in size, it can be much harder to find a compatible USB drive as these were far less commonly used, so the demand for a drive to suit this size is significantly smaller. If you can’t find a compatible drive online, your best bet would be to pull your old computer out of storage and use its built-in floppy drive. From there, you can use an ethernet cable to copy the data over LAN to your modern PC.
