Spring Nail Trends

Spring Nail Trends 2021

Published: 27/04/2021

Going to the salon is a wonderful, relaxing treat that many of us look forward to. But sometimes you just need to take your beauty routine into your own hands - literally! When getting to the nail bar isn’t possible, or you want to experiment with a new look, doing your nails at home is a fab way to still get that pamper time in without going out.

Fashion trends have a habit of reaching much further than just the clothes we wear - everything is influenced by rising trends, from home décor to our makeup and, you guessed it, nails! Thankfully, trying out nail trends needn’t be expensive or scary, so if you’re looking to test out some new styles, check out the top spring 2021 trends below!

How to prep your home salon

home salon

The first step to preparing your home nail salon is to find the inspiration you like! Check out sites such as Pinterest or Instagram to see what’s trending or to find a design you want to base your own on. After that, you’ll be able to judge the tools, colours, and accessories you’ll need. Want that super glossy, hard-wearing nail design? Gel polish will do the trick nicely. Is your design just solid colours? Regular nail varnish will do just fine. If you want to add details, you’ll need to grab some embellishments, decorative tape, or other finishing touches to complete your look. Thankfully, you’ll find everything you need to stock up your home salon among our extensive selection of nail polish and nail art accessories - think of it as your one-stop shop for all things talons and trimmings!

A job well done requires a good workspace. Find a room where you can enjoy the time you’ll spend there - an office or lounge are good options for streaming shoes or watching TV while you work. You’ll need a good, solid work surface like a dining room table or desk that's well lit. It’s frustrating trying to do detailed work while simultaneously trying to stay out of your own shadow, so make sure to grab a desk lamp or table light. Protect your surface with a tablecloth, newspaper, or a cutting mat that you don’t mind getting dirty.

Set up your phone or laptop with your nail art design inspiration before you get painting. Make sure they’re out of the way but still visible before you gather your supplies in an easy-to-reach place. An organised work space leaves less room for mistakes or accidents, enabling you to just enjoy the process of the pamper. Don’t forget to grab a comforting hot drink, some water, or even a glass of wine before getting started. You don’t want to fumble around while your nails are wet - trust us!

Now that you’ve got all your supplies, found a space to chill, and got your drink, it’s time to get painting!

“Florals for spring? Groundbreaking…”

floral nails

We’re sure it comes as no surprise that one of the biggest spring trends for nail art designs is florals. Whether combined with striking geometric shapes, block colours, or simple tips, flowers are the go-to trend of the season - and it’s not hard to see why! Spring is when we begin to see nature reawaken from its long, winter slumber, after all. Flowers start popping up, breathing some welcomed life and colour back into the world. Similarly, florals breathe some life and colour back into our style after a winter of wearing dark navy and black.

To create a beautiful, simplistic floral design on your nails, you’ll need:

As with all nail art creations, you first need to decide on a base colour. For a feminine floral look, we recommend going for a nude, pastel, or clear coat. Once fully dry, you can get started with the petals. Using your brush or a dotting tool, make dots in a circle on your nail. For larger flowers, you may only need a couple, but for smaller designs, five or six will be the most effective. Gently drag the inside edge of each dot into the centre to create a petal shape and allow to dry. Once dry, place a dot in the centre of the petals in a different colour or add a little rhinestone like one of these Oypla Nail Decoration Gems for a bit of sparkle. Allow to dry fully, finish off with lashings of clear top coat, and you’re done!

A dash of rainbow pastels

An unavoidable trend, pastels make their annual resurgence each and every spring. Softer and less saturated than vibrant colours or shocking neons, pastels have become just as synonymous with springtime as florals, complementing the delicate colour palette of the season. This year, pastels are back (no surprises there!), but with an exciting new twist. Yes, rainbow pastels are in and they’re taking the beauty world by storm. What’s more, they’re super easy to do and even easier to customise. With so many different colours to choose from, you can create a style that’s totally unique to you. Playful and pretty, what’s not to love?

To make the most of pastel rainbow nails, choose five different colours, one for each finger. Paint each nail with about two coats each in any order you like. You can opt for a gradient that follows the usual rainbow colours, or you can do it randomly. The beauty about pastels is that no matter which order you choose, the colours will complement each other beautifully.

Fancy doing something a bit more subtle? Why not choose one colour in multiple shades and do an ombre effect across all of your nails? You could easily mix different amounts of white polish into your chosen colour to achieve this look!

It’s easy being green

What colour screams ‘spring’ better than green? It’s the colour of new beginnings, new leaves, and a sign that the longer days are on their way. Green is a big trend this spring, seen in everything from clothing to home décor, so it’s the perfect colour to wear on your nails.

The best part about this trend is that it doesn’t even matter what shade of green you wear - yes, even neon! Opt for sage green for a soft and subtle look, lime green for a bright pop of colour, or emerald green for an elegant and classy look. You can’t go wrong.

Not a fan of going all out with the green? Try out a cute French tip design with some nail stickers for a more discrete design. This tutorial by Nashi Tutorials is a sweet yet subtle way to incorporate this trendy colour into your nail art. You’ll need a teal green colour like the Essie Naughty Nautical and some thin, very fine brushes for the dainty details.

‘90s throwback nail art

When you think of the ‘90s, you probably envisage bright colours, strong motifs, and a whole lot of stickers. Fun, fresh, and funky, we can’t seem to get enough of this old-school style, so it’s no wonder that it’s making such a huge comeback! Yes, skinny jeans are out and straight leg is back - and that’s just the start. Bold nail art, including bright butterfly motifs, abstract shapes, and intricately detailed designs are all on trend in any colour you can imagine.

When it comes to ‘90s nail art designs, the only limit is your imagination. You can pick up ready-made stickers that go over the entire nail, nail decals to stick on separately, or go wild and create your own bold designs with a bunch of different colours. For the latter, we recommend picking up a fully-loaded set of varnishes, like this 11pk Essie Nail Lacquer Set. You don’t want your designs chipping off after only a few hours of wear, so it’s important to bag yourself a quality set. Thankfully, Essie is one of the best nail polish companies around. They offer long-lasting, hard-wearing formulas, and this set of 11 colours is the perfect way to play with springtime shades. No matter whether you’re feeling artistic or not, you can partake in this fun '90s nail trend. Find all kinds of stickers, decals, and other accessories in our selection of nail art accessories and get creative!

One of the most memorable trends from the 1990s is tie-dye. Tie-dye covered everything back then and it’s a trend that has come roaring back into style. Check out this tutorial by Robin Moses Nail Art to see for yourself just how easy a tie-dye nail design can be!

The finishing touches

The finishing touches

When you’ve finished with your design and your nail polish is dry, there’s just one thing left to do - seal it in place! Add a layer of Essie Speed Setter top coat to each nail and prepare to dazzle with your eye-catching claws. Topping off your nails with a layer of clear top coat will help to ensure your new look lasts as long as possible, protecting the final details and gems and preventing the tips from chipping off after just one day. All that’s left to do now is to enjoy your nails and, if you’re anything like us, take a million photos to put on social media!
