Christmas is just around the corner and high street retailers have revealed the festive drinks that will keep us warm during the cold season. With the increase in coffee shops on our high streets, a seasonal hot drink can be hard to avoid, so while Christmas is the perfect time to indulge and stop counting calories, it's good to be aware of the nutritional value of our favourite hot drinks. As a result, here at OnBuy, as an online marketplace, we decided to have a look at the festive hot drinks released this year by the five major coffee chains in the UK: Starbucks, Costa, Caffè Nero, Pret a Manger and Greggs.
We analysed the number of calories and grams of sugar found in each festive coffee and hot chocolate to see which is the most calorific and which one contains the most sugar. The drinks selected for this research contain semi-skimmed milk and are a regular size (approximately 12 oz). Simultaneously, the nutritional value represents the standard drink, with no additional sugar added by the customers.
The research reveals that the festive drink containing the most grams of sugar is the Belgian Truffle Hot Chocolate released by Caffè Nero, with a regular cup containing a whopping 56.9g of sugar; the equivalent of a staggering 14 teaspoons of sugar! Caffè Nero strikes again with another special beverage following next, the Winter Spiced Hot Chocolate. While it might sound delicious, this festive hot drink contains 51.6g of sugar - 12.9 teaspoons of sugar.
Pret a Manger's Orange Hot Chocolate comes in third place with 50.5g of sugar, followed closely by their Mint hot Chocolate which contains 50.2g of sugar - the equivalent of just under 13 teaspoons of sugar.

Unsurprisingly, out of the top 10 calorific and sugary festive hot drinks, seven are hot chocolate.
At the other end of the scale, OnBuy found that Starbucks's Toffee Nut Latte is the fifth least sugary festive hot drink, containing 28.3g of sugar - a 28.6g difference from the sugar heavy Belgian Truffle Hot Chocolate offered by Caffè Nero.
The Crème Brûlée Latte released by Pret a Manger takes fourth place with 26.6g of sugar, followed by their Gingerbread Latte (24.8g).
Finally, the retailer that offers the jolliest festive hot drink with the least sugar, surprisingly is Caffè Nero's Salted Caramel Latte with 24.6g of sugar - equivalent to around 6 teaspoons of sugar.
When it comes the number of calories found in 2018's Christmas drinks, Pret a Manger's Orange Hot chocolate is the most calorific (454 kcal), followed by their Mint Hot Chocolate (452 kcal).
On the other hand, it seems opting for a Salted Caramel Latte is the best way to keep the pounds off, as Greggs offer one with 240 calories, whilst Caffè Nero takes the crown for the hot drink with the lowest number of calories (153).
