The Most Trolled Music Artists On Twitter

In the age of the superfan, it’s hard to think of boy bands or chart-topping singers without also thinking of legions of adoring, screaming fans following their every move, too. Devout to their idols, these hardcore fans would practically fight to the death to rep their favourites, taking to social media to exhibit their unconditional love and support. 

Despite these public displays of affection, it seems that many of us have a lot of negativity to throw at even the most adored musicians, which begs the question: who exactly is the most trolled artist on Twitter? We partnered up with SEMrush to conduct sentiment analysis on Tweets surrounding the top 20 artists of 2020 to reveal all!

Which artists are trolled the most on Twitter?

From our analysis, we can reveal that Cardi B is the most trolled artist in the British charts. Maybe it’s her outspoken nature, explicit lyrics, or just jealousy, but almost a quarter (24.09%) of Tweets about her are negative.

In second place is Roddy Ricch. Rising to fame in 2018 with his hit single ‘Die Young’ before landing two number-one singles in 2019 and 2020, he’s sealed his place as a rising star in music. Despite this, it seems many Twitter users disagree with his popularity, as he received hate in 22.47% of the Tweets analysed.

Canadian rapper, Drake, is the third most trolled artist online. Securing several number one hits and albums in Britain, it’s surprising to see that he received negativity in 22.24% of Tweets. Maybe some social media users think he’s just too overrated... 

Following closely behind in fourth place is fellow rapper and collaborator, Future, with 19.96% of Tweets found to be negative towards the star. Working with the likes of Lil Uzi Vert, Meek Mill, and Travis Scott to name a few, perhaps his worldwide acclaim opens him up to more criticism?

Fifth place goes to British music royalty and funny man Lewis Capaldi, with 19.59% of Tweets analysed in our study deemed negative. 

Other popular artists feature among the top 10, including The Weeknd, with 15.39% Tweets found to be negative, and 24kGoldn, with 14.03% of Tweets identified as being negative.


The bottom 10

Flipping the results, we can reveal that Harry Styles is the least trolled artist on Twitter. Our analysis found that he received just 7.08% of negative Tweets. Rising star Billie Eilish follows closely behind in 19th, with 7.63% negative Tweets. 

Dua Lipa’s catchy pop tunes (7.92%) and Doja Cat’s loyal fanbase (9.90%) means they follow with only a slightly higher negative tweet ratio in 18th and 17th place, with Grammy nominee MNEK clinching 16th. 

Megan Thee Stallion comes in 15th place with just 10.63% of Tweets found to be in a negative tone, which is a shock entry considering her recent collaboration with the most trolled in our study, Cardi B, on the song “WAP”.

Which artists are the most loved on Twitter?

Moving away from the hate, let’s spread some love instead! 

Billie Eilish is the most loved artist on Twitter with the highest percentage of positive Tweets, racking up a whopping 73.77% positive and 7.63% negative - the second lowest. Showing young female singer-songwriters around the world that you can make it doing what you love, it seems we really resonate with her work ethic.

Not only is he the least trolled, but Harry Styles is also the second most loved with a whopping 68.75% of positive Tweets. Since disbanding from One Direction, he’s been revered for his open-mindedness towards fashion, representation, and even music itself, thus contributing towards his position.

Other artists with the most positive impressions include:

  • Dua Lipa – 59.33% positivity
  • Joel Corry – 53.72% positivity
  • MNEK – 51.80% positivity

  • OnBuy gathered a list of the (2020) year-ending top 20 artists, according to the UK official charts.
  • Utilising SEMrush, Twitter sentiment analysis was conducted on each artist’s official Twitter account to collect the percentage of positive vs. negative Tweets surrounding them.
  • Data presented stretches back 40 days prior to the date of collection (16/02/21).
