The history of Milka

The Milka story starts on 17th November 1825, in the heart of Switzerland. Here, chocolatier Philippe Suchard established a patisserie in Neuchâtel, where he sold a handmade dessert called ‘chocolat fin de sa fabrique’ (fine chocolate from its own factory). The following year, he expanded his company and moved production to a nearby town, where he manufactured 25-30kg of this creamy confectionery daily, in a rented former water mill. In 1880, Suchard’s successor founded the first chocolate factory outside of Switzerland in Lörrach, Germany and, though milk had not previously been added the cocoa as a primary ingredient, it was soon set to make a storming appearance.

On April 24th 1901, the first Milka bar was born. Registered as a trademark, the brand name is derived by combining the titles of the product’s two main ingredients: MILch (milk) and KAkao (cocoa or chocolate). Packaged in the distinctive lilac-coloured wrapping, their products were first introduced in Austria, to spread popularity and global recognition. By 1913, the company was producing 18 times more chocolate than that of their original plant, and plans were in place to popularise Christmas and Easter-related themed creations, in the novelty shapes of Santa Clause, seasonal bunnies, and eggs.

What makes Milka chocolate so unique?

As with many chocolate brands, the superior taste and exclusivity lies in the sheer diversity of flavours on offer. With a unique portfolio of tablets, biscuits, soft cakes, bars, pralines, and seasonals on offer, there really is so much choice when it comes to Milka’s creations. From the traditional milk or hazelnut, to caramel, yogurt, and almond, there are so many combinations to try.

From the very start, Milka’s branding has been distinctive, characteristic, and individual. The lilac colouring and famed cow mascot are instantly recognisable across the globe, and provide the company with a matchless sense of personality within the confectionery market. Originally conceived as a tribute to Art Nouveau as a symbol of extravagance, seduction, and magic, the packaging is sure to have helped generate more than $1.5 billion of revenues as of 2016 alone. Now sold in over 40 countries, including Argentina, Turkey, the US, and China, more than 150,000 Milka products are sold around the world every hour!
