The history of Elf on the Shelf
The Elf on the Shelf story starts in 2004, in the heart of the USA. Here, Carol Aebersold developed a heartfelt activity that would excite and entertain her two young daughters, creating a corresponding picture book to match. Telling a festive-themed story, written in rhyme, that explains how Santa Clause knows who is naughty and nice, it describes elves visiting children from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, after which they return to the North Pole until the next holiday season.
The manuscript itself was co-authored by Carol and her daughter, following familial suggestions that they should write a book about their yuletide decorative traditions. The Elf on the Shelf won the Best Toy Award by Learning Express in 2008 and, three years later, even inspired a 30-minute animated TV special, which aired on CBS. One of the most prominent playthings on the festive market, this toy even made an appearance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, in November 2012.
How do I play Elf on the Shelf?
The Elf on the Shelf is a fun-filled festive tradition that has captured the hearts of children everywhere, when welcoming one of Santa’s Scout Elves into their home every holiday season. This magical individual helps Father Christmas manage his nice list by taking note of a family’s yuletide adventures, reporting back to the North Pole nightly. Each morning, the Scout Elf returns to their household and perches in a new spot, waiting for someone to spot them.
Little ones aren’t advised to touch the Elf, at the risk of them losing their magic. If a Scout is moved by mistake, the official Elf on the Shelf website advises children to write an apology letter to Santa, sprinkling a little dusting of cinnamon beside their character before bedtime.
