Vaillant’s simmering start
Vaillant dates back to 1874, when the company was founded in the German city of Remscheid, located in the North Rhine-Westphalia state. Vaillant originally began as a fitting business, installing boilers rather than making them, but things changed twenty years after the company first opened its doors. This was the year that its founder, Johann Vaillant, patented his unique “closed-system” bathroom boiler. His machine was the first gas-fired boiler that could boil water without contaminating it with combustion gases. This is already an impressive achievement, but Vaillant wasn't done yet.
Their true breakthrough was in 1924, when Vaillant engineers designed the world’s first central heating boiler. Yes, that’s right: the heating system that’s used in almost every house in the country is a Vaillant invention. Obviously such a groundbreaking innovation meant that Vaillant has kept on top of the world’s biggest boiler manufacturers for all these decades, adding more new inventions to their portfolio every now and again. In the 2020s, Vaillant employs approximately 13,000 staff worldwide and has an annual turnover of around 3 billion euros. Despite their success Vaillant remains a family owned business, entirely in the hands of descendants of the company founder.
Vaillant products
It’ll be no surprise that the company that invented central heating systems concentrates a lot of their energy on manufacturing high quality gas boilers. Their wide range includes traditional open vent boilers, system boilers and combi boilers. Each of these boiler types suits a different home. Combi boilers, for example, are best suited to smaller homes with a single bathroom. Whichever boiler you choose you can be sure it’ll work well: the entire Vaillant boiler range was awarded the Best Buy certification by consumer advocacy group Which?
Since 2006, Vaillant has been more and more interested in producing products designed to help tackle the climate crisis. One such product line is their range of heat pumps. A heat pump uses a compressor and refrigerant chemical to extract heat from outside a building and pump it indoors. They can be powered entirely from electricity and are much more efficient than a traditional boiler. If you power a heat pump with a solar panel, these machines can keep your home warm without producing any greenhouse gases.
