How many times have you wished you had a dash cam to record a dodgy driver on the road? Well it's time to stop putting it off and get one added to your car.

OnBuy is here with a handy guide to navigate you through the different types and the best features to look out for (and even how to save money on your insurance with one!).

Types of dash cam

This is the easy part as there's only two different types of dash cam: front dash cams and dual dash cams.

As the name suggests, front dash cams record the view in front of your car while dual cameras (A.K.A. front and rear dash cams) also record the view through your back window.

Dash cam features

If you want the best dash cam, you need to check out the features on offer, which range from something as simple as HD recording up to crash detecting dash cams and wireless versions. Here are some of our favourites to look out for.

Top Tip: Use our handy filter options to select the must-have features you want in a dash cam and only see the options right for you!

HD and 4K dash cams

While you can get standard 780p quality cameras, we'd definitely recommend upgrading to HD or 4K. These allow you to record every detail on the road.

Dash cams with night vision

If you want to make sure you're covered whenever you're driving, a dash cam with night vision is essential. Standard dash cams will struggle to capture details in the dark and with the glare of headlights, but night vision dash cams use infra-red tech to capture it all.

Dash cams with GPS

It might seem unnecessary, but this will make settling insurance claims so much easier should you have an accident. The GPS marks your location and speed to help prove your case in a dispute.

Dash cams with parking mode

You won't ever have to worry about someone driving off after hitting your vehicle in the car park - parking mode detects when the car has been hit, even when switched off, so you capture every incident.

Dash cams with G-force sensors

These driving cameras monitor G-forces to detect when you've had a crash - when it detects a collision, it will automatically save the footage and prevent it from being overwritten.

Auto-starting dash cams

Exactly what you'd expect, these dash cams switch on automatically when you start the engine, so you never have to worry about your drive not being recorded.

Dash cam FAQs

Do I need a memory card for my dash cam?

Most dash cams save their video to an SD memory card, which don't cost much at all. The bigger the memory card size, the more footage you can record (we'd recommend buying at least a 32GB memory card to record multiple journeys.

You can then easily download your footage to your phone or laptop wirelessly if you buy a Wi-Fi dash cam, or if not, just plug it into your device.

Does having a dash cam reduce the cost of insurance?

Insurers will generally offer cheaper premiums if you use a dash cam. Given how affordable they are to buy, it can be a great investment to save money and keep yourself protected while on the road.

How do I install a dash cam?

Most dash cams use a suction pad to attach to your windscreen and then they're usually powered through your car's cigarette lighter or USB port.
