Fried food is a delicious treat, but deep fat fryers can be a hassle to clean. However, follow these tips and you can enjoy flavoursome foods and not have to worry about putting in the elbow grease to clean them!

How to clean a deep fat fryer safely

Deep fat fryers heat the oil to a very high temperature, which can cause burns. Before you begin, make sure you’ve unplugged the fryer and allowed it to cool completely. Some deep fat fryers have alerts so you know the oil has cooled.

Lightly clean your fryer regularly

Cleaning a deep fat fryer doesn’t have to be an arduous task. While it might sound like more work, cleaning regularly will actually make it easier.

After each use, you should carefully discard any remaining oil, wipe the interior and exterior of the fryer with a damp cloth, and dry it with a clean towel.

To make it that little bit easier, look for a deep fat fryer with dishwasher-safe parts (and find out what else you should look for with our deep fat fryer buying guide).

Save money by reusing your oil. Most cooking oil used in a deep fat fryer can be reused. Once it's cool, all you need to do is fold a piece of kitchen towel into a funnel or a coffee filter and pour the oil through it.

Deep clean it occasionally

If you’ve been using your deep fat fryer more frequently, you’ll need to give it a more thorough clean. The first step is to empty the oil from the fryer, then fill it with hot, soapy water and allow it to soak for a few hours. This will help to loosen any built-up grease and grime.

Afterwards, you should use a non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge to scrub the interior of the fryer. Once you’ve finished scrubbing, rinse the fryer with warm water and dry it thoroughly with a clean towel.

Don't neglect your fryer basket

The fryer basket should also be cleaned regularly to keep it in a good condition for longer. It will often have burnt-on bits that are tougher to wipe off.

To save yourself the hassle, fill a sink or bucket with hot, soapy water and soak the basket in there for a few hours. Afterwards, you should be able to easily wipe it clean.

Ready… Steady… Cook!

Cleaning a deep fat fryer doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. Follow these tips to keep your deep fat fryer in good working order and ensure that you’re able to enjoy delicious fried food for many years to come.
