What are Fiskars Loppers?

Fiskars is a world-class manufacturer of blades and cutting products. From scissors to secateurs, Fiskars offer some of the best quality blades in the world.

Loppers are a garden tool comprising of two scissor-like blades designed specifically for cutting back vegetation and branches in your garden. Just like a pair of secateurs, they can be used on all kinds of hedges, bushes and shrubs but these blades feature two long handles. They are used with two hands to offer the best leverage so you can slice through thicker branches than with a pair of one-handed secateurs. The name “lopper” is derived from the verb "to lop", meaning to cut off (especially branches or twigs).

The main distinction between the different types of loppers is between “bypass” and “anvil” types. Bypass loppers operate like scissors, except that they generally only have one blade that moves past a jaw or hook that has a blunt square edge that is usually concave or hook-shaped in order to keep branches from slipping out of the jaws. The jaws of bypass loppers may be straight, curved, or a combination of both. Anvil loppers have a single sharpened blade, with a straight or sometimes curved edge, that closes against a flat, anvil-like surface on the other side of the jaws, usually made of a softer metal than the blade.

The type of lopper you choose is entirely down to personal preference however anvil loppers tend to leave a less tidy cut behind than bypass loppers do. However, anvil loppers tend to be able to stand up to tougher and my fibrous branches whereas bypass loppers may sometimes slip when trying to cut through thick branches which can pose a risk to you as a user. It’s best to have one of each and to use them interchangeably depending on the type of branch or plant you are trimming.
