About Gel Polish
Whether gels are your go-to nail style or you haven’t dabbled with it yet, OnBuy’s gel polish edit is bound to tempt even the most discerning manicure gurus. Our selection of gel nail polish showcases an array of styles (and not to mention, colours!), so both beginners and professionals can get stuck in.
What makes gel polish so special?
Not only is gel nail polish a great option if you can’t stand touching up your manicure every few days (we feel your pain!), but it can also protect your natural nails from wear and tear - nail-biters, this one’s for you!
With gel-based polish, this nifty way of doing your nails works by using a UV or LED light to cure the polish and lock it onto your nails. Delivering longer-lasting results and a sturdier feel, it’s no wonder it has quickly become a favourite manicure of choice for beauty junkies worldwide.
As the gel polish features a quick-dry formula, it’s also significantly quicker to apply and means you can get back to your day in no time. The finish is a gorgeous, glossy effect that works beautifully with all nails, no matter if yours give Cardi B a run for her money or they’re on the shorter side.
What’s more, thanks to their ultra-shiny, sleek appearance, gel polish makes just about every shade pop. So, whether you opt for an office-appropriate nude, a classic deep red hue or something a little more funky, you can count on the colour of your nails to do the talking.
All in all, the long-lasting power of gel polish means less time spent doing your nails and more time showing off your talons!
Is gel polish safe for nails?
When applied carefully and correctly, gel polish is not actually harmful to nails. Usually, it’s the way the gel is removed that can cause some damage. Luckily, gel polish can be safely removed at home by following a few simple steps.
If you’re worried about UV exposure during the application process, you can apply a coat of sunscreen 15 minutes before exposure to protect your hands and feet. Similarly, fingerless gloves or pedicure socks will do the trick!
How do I remove gel polish safely?
If you’re ready to change up your colour, you’re probably wondering what the safest and easiest way to remove your current gel polish is. Luckily, it won’t normally require a trip to the salon and can be achieved from the comfort of your home!
Firstly, start by protecting your surface in a well-ventilated room to avoid ruining your beautiful marble worktop and stop you from breathing in more acetone than necessary. Acetone will act as the gel polish remover and is ultra-strong, so it's best to have minimal contact with it.
Then, gently buff your nails to remove the shine from the gel polish top coat layer, before soaking some cotton balls in acetone. Ensure you add a good layer of cuticle oil or cream to protect the skin around your nails and prevent it from drying out excessively.
Pop the acetone-soaked end onto your nail and allow the liquid to soak through, wrap your fingertips in aluminium foil and wait for around 10-15 minutes to let the acetone do its magic, with the cotton still on your nails.
Upon removing the foil, you’ll be ready to start scraping off the gel polish from your nails using a manicure tool like an orangewood stick. Make sure you scrap downwards from the cuticle to avoid any damage to your nails. If you come across any stubborn pieces, you’ll need to repeat the process of applying acetone and leaving it to soak.
Finally, don’t forget to moisturise your nails after washing your hands to keep them soft and protected from the drying effects of acetone. Now that you’ve removed your old gel polish, you’re ready for a brand new shade from OnBuy’s gel polish edit. Which will you opt for first?
