Children learn about pet animals at a very young age. They may have pets in their family, or at other homes they visit. Almost certainly they will have seen them in their books, on the television or have toys featuring them. So this puzzle subject will be very familiar.

Puzzles are a wonderful way to encourage shape recognition, improve fine motor skills, and - with this one - recognise different shades of four basic colours

The wooden base board has four 'traditional' pet homes - a bird cage, kennel, cushion and fish-bowl. Each habitat has a colour on it - green base to the cage, yellow roof on the kennel, pink cushion and blue bowl. Each pet is a corresponding colour - green bird, yellow dog, pink cat and blue fish. The centre of each pet has a geometric shape - similar colour to the animal, but a darker shade. A green semi-circle makes the wing of the green bird, and the tummy of the other animals is a yellow square for the dog, pink triangle for the cat, and blue circle for the fish.

Puzzles are also useful for encouraging language use - talking about where the different animals live, what colour they are, how the shapes and colours are different, even making up stories about them.
