Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, buying a greenhouse can be a big step. However, we're going to break down what you need to know about the types, materials, and more to make that step much easier!

Which is better, plastic or glass greenhouses?

If you're looking for a greenhouse that is easy to set up, low-cost and provides good insulation, a plastic greenhouse is the best option for you. However, if you're looking for a greenhouse that has the classic look and allows natural light to flood in, then a glass greenhouse is better.

But those are only some of the materials available; we've broken down the options available in more detail below.

Plastic: Plastic greenhouses (or PVC) are lightweight, durable, and easy to assemble, making them a great option for those who want to set up a greenhouse quickly and easily. They are also highly cost-effective and provide good insulation, which can help keep your plants warm and happy even during the colder months. You can learn more about how they help insulate plants in our complete guide to polycarbonate greenhouses.

Glass: Glass greenhouses, however, give you the classic greenhouse look and allow natural light to flood in, providing your plants with the light they need to thrive. Glass greenhouses require more careful assembly and tend to come with a more premium price tag.

Aluminium: Strong yet lightweight, aluminium greenhouses require minimal maintenance and offer excellent insulation. They're also rust-resistant, although they tend to be more expensive than plastic.

Wood: Offering a traditional, rustic look, wooden greenhouses are naturally insulating and are relatively easy to assemble and maintain. They require more frequent maintenance than other materials and can quickly rot or warp if not properly cared for, but we have plenty of options in our woodcare range to prevent that. You should read our wooden greenhouse buying guide to learn about the option in more detail.

What's the best type of greenhouse for me?

Greenhouses come in a whole range of shapes and sizes, so you'll be able to find the perfect option, no matter how much space you've got or what you're growing. Here are some of the most popular types that we'd recommend checking out:

Mini greenhouses: Perfect if you're tight on space or just starting gardening, they're typically made of plastic or wood. You can fit them on a balcony or easily slot them out of the way in your garden.

Cold frames: These are similar to mini greenhouses, but they offer a more stylish option for your garden. They're like outdoor cabinets that protect your plants and help them to thrive.

Lean-to greenhouses: Ideal if you're growing with limited space, lean-to greenhouses attach to the side of a building or wall for additional support.

Polytunnels: These are more like covers than greenhouses; they're low to the ground and are handy for protecting a row of growing plants and vegetables in the ground. They're typically made of plastic or PVC.

Walk-in greenhouses: Ideal for those who want to grow larger plants or multiple plants at once, walk-in greenhouses have space to walk in - as the name suggests - to tend to your plants. Find out more about them with our walk-in greenhouse buying guide.
