How to sterilise Kilner jars

cleaning a jam jar

Sterilising jam jars is an important step to keep any harmful bacteria from growing on the sugar-rich jam, and while it might sound like a daunting task, it’s really not as hard as it sounds.

According to the experts over at BBC Good Food, you should wash up the jars with hot, soapy water, then put them on an oven tray covered with baking paper and heat in a preheated oven (160-180ºC) for 15 minutes. If your jars have rubber seals, take them out and put them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes as dry heat can cause damage.

A pair of jar tongs can be really handy to prevent any burns from the hot glass and stop bacteria being reintroduced. Don’t worry about cooling the jars, you’ll want the jars to still be hot when you pour in the jam - just put them to one side while your jam finishes bubbling away.

This might just look like a spatula, but this magical tool is much, much more! The 4-in-1 wonder serves as a conventional spatula as well as removing bubbles from the jam to prevent air pockets in your jar. For added safety and convenience, it has a pan hook to avoid any accidental slipping, and measurements are marked to help you out when you haven’t got a spare hand. We’ve already mentioned the importance of sterilising your jars - jam is the perfect fuel for bacteria and you could have your batch ruined if it’s not done correctly. It’s for exactly that reason that a funnel is another key weapon in your culinary arsenal. One of the simplest ways to let your defences down is to spill jam over the rim of your freshly sterilised jar - you see where we’re going with this…

An added bonus thanks to the built-in filter, it makes removing seeds and pips easier if you’re seeking a seedless variety of jam. Alternatively, if you wanted the option between seeded and seedless jams, you could buy a filterless funnel and use a muslin cloth - the choice is yours!

200pk Kilner wax discs
