Today, Time to Change is asking you to take a moment of your time to make contact with someone. Whether they’re a friend, relative, colleague or neighbour, create a conversation and get talking about mental health to show your support for the movement. Implemented to help change attitudes towards mental health issues, you won’t regret taking part in this worthwhile day.

Taking place on Thursday, February 4th 2021, this important annual event spearheaded by the prominent mental health social movement, Time To Change, encourages conversation without judgement around a host of mental illnesses. This includes everything from eating disorders to anxiety and depression.

Time To Change is asking the nation to come together today to help end the stigma surrounding mental health, shining a light on common myths and misunderstandings to create a better attitude towards those struggling with any form of mental illness. From the workplace to inside your home, mental health is just as important as our physical health and therefore deserves just as much attention.

Especially during lockdown when anxiety is rife throughout every age range, reaching out and making time to talk to your loved ones is essential to making those living with mental health problems feel understood and supported. Tackling mental health discrimination and stigma in the workplace, community, and among young age groups, Time To Change boasts several campaigns and even undertakes global work to spread their message as far as possible. As well as their annual ‘Time to Talk’ day, they’ve also created a five-year ‘In Your Corner’ campaign that was launched in 2017 to encourage both men and young people to ‘ask twice’ if their friend seems to be acting differently.

According to Time To Change, men are three times more likely than women to take their own lives, which is why the ‘In Your Corner’ campaign was focused on the mental wellbeing of men and removing the stigma around men discussing their general life fears, concerns, and mental health issues. ‘Time to Talk’, however, encourages having a chat with everyone and anyone, regardless of their age or gender.

By reaching people directly with their two national campaigns, Time to Change has already started improving millions of people’s attitudes and behaviour when it comes to addressing and speaking about mental health, but their work’s not over yet. Ready to help? You can do your bit to show your support for mental health wellbeing by signing up to Time To Change’s ‘Time to Talk’ campaign. Regardless of whether you’re planning to get involved with your friends, community, workplace or on your own, simply spreading the word can change the tide when it comes to talking about mental health conditions.

There’s a whole host of Time to Talk Day resources available to download for free online, with everything from posters to bingo sheets to help you spread awareness in any way you can. If you don’t have access to a printer, Time To Change recommends something as simple as having a conversation with another person - anyone - about mental health, as well as becoming a Time To Change Champion (someone with personal experience of a mental health illness) to reduce the stigma surrounding the subject.

Time To Change has found that nine out of ten people with a mental health problem have experienced some form of stigma and discrimination. So, why not do your bit and take action through one of the aforementioned avenues?

How you can make a difference during lockdown

Even with strict lockdown restrictions preventing us from seeing many of our loved ones in person, there are still plenty of small things you can do that actually make a difference - without even leaving the house! Time To Change suggests everything from sending a quick text message to check in with a relative, to setting up a virtual coffee morning with some of your dearest friends to discuss mental health issues, myths, and how you can support one another.

If you live alone and still miss physically meeting with someone, then why not try a socially-distanced walk? With the power to make a huge difference to both your own wellbeing and the lives of others, these simple changes and friendly additions to your day cost you nothing but could mean the world to someone fighting their own, invisible mental health battle.
