Prefer homeware to happy hour? You may be a Geri-lennial!
Nearly three times as likely to spend their hard-earned cash on baking goodies rather than a night on the town, Millennials are now actively seeking the solace of home over the bright lights and babble of a night club. That’s right, these old souls would rather receive an invite for a sophisticated dinner party than an all-night clubbing soirée, but why?
Exploring a relatively recent movement towards the quiet life, we dug a little deeper to unearth the true habits of these home-loving Millennials with an OnBuy survey and found that a whopping 50 per cent of respondents saw themselves as a 'Geri-lennial' - a young person who behaves older than their age. So, what exactly transforms a Millennial into a #Geri-lennial?
Well, if you’d rather bake a loaf of banana bread than go for a bottomless brunch, the chances are you’re a Geri-lennial - even if you don’t know it yet! Often preferring to settle down with a good book, binge their favourite Netflix series on the sofa or update their interior décor, these Millennials are shunning the traditional partygoer lifestyle in favour of a more laid back approach.
Of the 2,000 men and women aged 24 to 39 that participated in the survey, it revealed more than a third (36 per cent, in fact!) dedicated more of their free time to checking out homeware stores rather than meeting up with their pals. That’s right, activities such as cleaning the home, gardening, playing board games and even hitting the hay early all top an evening of socialising at a nightclub for these Geri-lennials, but what does this mean for Millennial spending habits?

Nearly half (a mammoth 49 per cent of survey respondents) would rather spend their money on home accessories to spruce up their pad than join their friends for a night out. Owing to more of their time being spent cooking up a storm in the kitchen and perusing homeware shelves (often spending one-and-a-half hours a week shopping homeware online), all that cash that used to fund a night at the club is now going towards snapping up home accessories, baking bits and even skincare goodies.
While it’s clear that noisy nightclubs are losing their appeal for many Millennials, socialising is still top of the agenda - they’re just eight times more likely to meet their mates in a restaurant than a raucous venue. Plus, with a third of respondents (34 per cent) finding more satisfaction from buying clever cleaning products than furniture, it seems Geri-lennials are choosing substance over style.
Despite this, they still manage to spend a considerable £70 per month elevating their interior to match fashionable home styles they see on the ‘gram and Pinterest. Instead of drawing on inspiration from flashy celeb cribs and property TV shows, Geri-lennials are taking advice from their friends and family to create their own style, encouraging them to spend their nights settled on the sofa instead of painting the town red.
An OnBuy spokesman, said:
“While millennials have a reputation for living a party lifestyle and having a great time into the early hours of the morning, the reality appears to be somewhat different.
“Given the opportunity, they’re likely to prefer a relaxing evening with a good book and a slice of home baked cake than a night on the tiles.
“A lot of this is down to their desire to enjoy the home they live in and have spent time decorating and ensuring it’s spotlessly clean.
“Our love of stylish homeware and a fondness for scrolling through other homes online is helping to ensure millennials enjoy the quieter life in the best possible setting.”
So, if you often spend your Saturday nights baking soufflés or enjoying a spot of home DIY over the din of a nightclub, we’re willing to bet you’re a geri-lennial, too!
