What exactly are Pokémon cards?
If you missed out on the Pokémon craze as a child and your own youngster is now obsessed with everything Pokémon, you might be left wondering what’s so special about these little cards! Well, simply put, Pokémon cards are trading cards that form the basis of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Pokémon cards come in various forms, including Basic Pokémon (the starting cards each depicting a lovable Pokémon from the video games), Evolved Pokémon, Baby Pokémon and the coveted Secret Rare Pokémon.
Alongside cards showing off an adorable Pokémon creature, little ones can also come across Energy cards (with the basic ones corresponding to Pokémon card types: Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, Fighting, Darkness, Metal, and Fairy). Special Energy cards also exist and offer additional benefits to basic Energy cards.
Used to perform different functions in the game, Trainer cards make up the remainder of Pokémon cards and include Item cards, Tool cards, Stadium cards and Supporter cards (more powerful Item cards).
If all this sounds a little much, we don’t blame you! There’s certainly a knack to these popular collectible cards and it can take some time to wrap your head around them - which is precisely what keeps youngsters so engrossed.
How do you play Pokémon with cards?
While Pokémon cards can simply be used as collectibles to trade between friends in the playground, they can also be used to play Pokémon games - or more specifically, the Pokémon Trading Card Game we mentioned previously.
Just like in the anime series and video games, gameplay revolves around your youngster taking on the role of a Pokémon trainer and using their Pokémon to battle their opponent’s Pokémon. Players build decks around their favourite Pokémon and send their Pokémon into the field to prove who the best trainer is.
The different Pokémon cards can be used to shape and control gameplay - for example, boosting a Pokémon’s attack power with an Energy card or healing a Pokémon with a Trainer card. With an abundance of different Pokémon cards on offer, the game is never the same twice.
Originally published in Japan in 1996, the Pokémon Trading Card Game has stayed relevant to this day with the release of thrilling new expansion and booster packs. With new features constantly appearing, Pokémon fans are cleverly kept on their toes in anticipation for new additions.
How are Pokémon cards collected?
With a huge popularity and market share in the strategic card game category, Pokémon cards are extremely easy to get hold of - and our virtual shelves await!
