About IP Phones

An essential part of the modern world, staying digitally connected is more important then ever in effectively running businesses, homes and even emergency services. The speedy and clear relaying of information is therefore vital and can be easily achieved by installing an IP phone into your home or office.

As you'll see from our extensive OnBuy edit of affordable IP phones, they can be cordless, corded or complete with answering machines, yet they all work in the same way by transmitting data via the internet. Not to mention, we also have a large range of branded handsets for you to choose from including Panasonic, Philips, Avaya and Cisco IP phones.

What are IP phones and how do they work?

IP phones, also referred to as VoIP (voice over internet) phones, quite simply allow you to use the internet to place your call instead of a using a telephone line. They are incredibly common and continue to grow in popularity, you may have even walked past one without realising that it wasn't a traditional telephone, also known as a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service).

Instead of breaking down audio and transforming it into electrical pulses like your conventional POTS landline, an IP phone sends data by taking an individual's analogue voice signals and converting them into digital signals. These digital signals are sent into the network and fired out over the internet.

Are IP phones better than analogue models?

As outlined above, IP and analogue phones do work differently in the way that they transmit data, but which one is actually better? This depends on your purpose. If you only have one phone in your home or tend to use your moble phone to make all of your most important calls, spending hours searching for the perfect IP phone would be a waste as a conventional analogue will do the trick.

However, for large offices the IP phone cannot be beaten. It has all the features that you'd expect from an analogue telephone line, but also benefits from much lower running and installation costs, the ability to make calls from anywhere and complete portability, so you can use the same number no matter where you go.

All of these aforementioned qualities are incredibly beneficial to large, corporate companies that could make hundreds (if not thousands) of pounds of savings from this one switch, not to mention the additional strengths of portability and accessibility, ideal for effortless business travel.

Ultimately, if you're looking to replace an old, outdated home phone, rushing to purchase an expensive IP phone isn't necessary, but for big businesses making the digital switch it could be a real game-changer.
