About Irons & Accessories
It feels good to put on a crisply ironed shirt or to steam a crinkled dress back into its smooth, beautiful self. But how do you choose the right iron for you? Whether you need a powerful, high performance iron that will quickly get through that teetering pile of clothes, or a straightforward model that just gets the job done, it can be daunting to choose the right iron for you. Check out the following tips and tricks to help you make your decision.
How to choose your iron or clothes steamer
The first thing to think about is what your clothing is made from as some garments can take a lot more manipulation and pressing than others. For anything with a high cotton or linen content, you will probably want to look into irons that can deal a fair bit of heat and steam to get the all creases out of these naturally crinkly fabrics. Anything with polyester or nylon in will need to be pressed on a much cooler setting to avoid them melting and ruining your nice new iron and outfit! A lot of clothing nowadays is made from a mixture of man-made and natural materials so it may be in your best interests to go with an iron that has multiple settings and customisable steam options.
Some garments made from very delicate fabrics such as silk or satin may not be suitable to be pressed at all. A garment steamer may be the best option for these items as you can allow it to hang while you remove any wrinkles with a gentle stream of steam. Garment steamers are also a great way to refresh items of clothing that may be a bit more difficult to wash such as wool jackets or even curtains.
Next, consider how much ironing you are going to be doing. If you are only going to be pressing the odd shirt, a simple multipurpose iron may be enough for you. If you’re going to stand in front of the ironing board for hours, pressing a week’s worth of clothing in one go, or perhaps do a lot of sewing, a steam generating iron would be ideal. They sit on their own stand and create powerful steam to press even the deepest of wrinkles and may be best to help you power through that pile of laundry.
Additionally, if you plan to do your ironing somewhere where a cord could get easily tangled or somewhere there aren’t any nearby electrical sockets, why not give a rechargeable or cordless iron a chance? It could help ease the annoyance of having a cord get stuck or things or not having quite enough length left to reach all the way to the end of the ironing board - frustrating!
By considering and answering these questions you should be able to narrow down your choices and be able to make the perfect choice for your needs!
