In Coup, 2 to 6 players will tell as many lies as possible in order to seize power in a collapsing future government. Published by Indie Boards and Cards in 2012, this game is a must-have for any player who loves swashbuckling games.

Each player has two face-down characters, known only to them. When it's your turn, the face-down cards will allow you to perform various actions. For example, if you own a Duke, you can get three coins from the central supply instead of just one. When a player takes three coins from the supply when the character is face down, how do you know they actually have the Duke?

If you suspect a player is taking action for a character they don't have, you can call their bluff. If you successfully call them, then they lose a life, but if you challenge incorrectly, then you lose a life.

Whenever players collect seven bucks, they can stage a coup. This is an unstoppable action and will remove a player's life. When to launch a coup is key to winning the game.

Most social deduction/hidden role/bluff games improve when you play a lot of games with the same group of players. The coup was no exception. Being able to discover player narratives or habits is extremely valuable. Even better, use these to your advantage. If a player is known for using an Assassin from the start, in future games they will be able to pretend to have one without anyone challenging them.

This game has player eliminations, but each game ends so quickly that you won't spend more than a few minutes watching others play. You are interested in information that has not yet been disclosed, so you will still be involved in what happens after the elimination.

If you like games like Cockroach Poker and Skull, then Coup will be a great addition to your collection. Learning the different characters and actions can be daunting. Once you've played a 15-minute game with player assistance, you'll be stealing gold from your friends as if you actually owned the cards you claimed to own.
