Sadolin Outdoor Varnish is a highly resilient clear exterior wood varnish, perfect for windows, doors, and conservatories. It offers waterproofing with UV filter protection, enhancing the natural beauty of wood. Suitable for both new wood and ongoing maintenance.
For an alternative clear exterior wood varnish with a Gloss option, consider Sadolin Yacht Varnish.
Prior to treatment, ensure timber surfaces are properly prepared, clean, stable, and dry, with a moisture content not exceeding 18%.
For bare and new timber
- Remove any resinous deposits with a scraper.
- Degrease exposed bare timber using a lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits.
- Thoroughly sand timber exposed to weather for 4 weeks or longer, or any loose, grey, or denatured timber.
- Some tropical hardwoods like Iroko, Idigbo, and Teak may require scrubbing with cellulose thinners before application.
- Remove organic growths and treat infected surfaces with a suitable mould and mildew cleaner.
- Clean remaining sound surfaces with warm water and mild detergent, then rinse thoroughly.
- Avoid using knotting agents with Sadolin translucent systems.
- Fill holes or imperfections in the timber with Sadolin Wood Filler or Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler. For larger areas, use Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler.
- Use non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings.
- Non-preservative-treated softwood timber should receive two liberal coats of Sadolin Wood Preserver, allowing 24 hours drying time between coats before over-coating with Sadolin Outdoor Varnish.
For previously coated timber
- Remove any previous paint coating and defective coatings completely, sanding back to clean, bright timber, and treat as 'New Timber'.
- Take precautions when preparing pre-1960s painted surfaces due to potential lead content.
For glazing
- Apply Sadolin Outdoor Varnish to the backs of new glazing beads, end grains, and rebates before fixing.
- Glaze joinery with Sadolin woodstain systems using a suitable sealant.
- Avoid using linseed oil putty or modified, non-setting compounds with Sadolin systems.
- Consult the manufacturer of the relevant glazing material for compatibility.
- Silicone glazing materials should only be applied after finishing coats.
Note: Sadolin Outdoor Varnish can be combined with one or more base stain coats of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection for a desired stain colour, followed by two full coats of Outdoor Varnish.
Prior to starting, conduct a small test area to assess consistency and compatibility of the finish. Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions on the tin.
Avoid application in rainy conditions or when air/substrate temperatures are below 8C or above 25C, or when relative humidity exceeds 80% during application or drying periods. Protect from frost and rain until dry to prevent adverse effects on drying, visual quality, and durability.
Thoroughly stir the product before and during application to prevent sheen variations. The product is ready for use and should not be thinned.
- Apply in a full, flowing coat, ensuring all surfaces and end grains are fully coated.
- For optimal results, use a high-quality, long-haired, soft bristle brush.
- Where possible, apply Sadolin Outdoor Varnish all around before fixing.
- Pay special attention to end grain, tops and bottoms of doors, and undersides of sills.
- Apply 2 or 3 coats of Sadolin Outdoor Varnish, depending on your project's requirements.
- Allow 16-24 hours drying time between coats.
Clean brushes and equipment with a proprietary brush cleaner immediately after use. In case of spills, remove the varnish immediately while still wet, using clean white spirit.
What is the difference between matt and Satin?
Sheen level refers to the amount of light a product reflects. Matt has minimal light reflection, while Satin has a moderate sheen.
Would Outdoor Varnish be as effective as a wood stain on windows?
This product does not contain pigments to colour the timber. It is a clear varnish that forms a protective film over the wood surface. Consider Sadolin Classic Wood Protection as an alternative for staining.
