Overview
Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish offers versatility for a variety of indoor woodworking endeavours.
For floor applications, we recommend Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish.
Before application, ensure that timber surfaces are appropriately prepared, clean, stable, and dry. The moisture content should not exceed 14% prior to varnishing.
For bare or new timber
- Remove any resinous deposits using a scraper.
- Wipe the exposed bare timber surface with a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits, changing the cloth frequently. Allow the solvent to fully evaporate before applying subsequent coats.
- Lightly sand along the grain using suitable abrasive paper, ensuring not to damage the timber surface.
- Thoroughly remove any sanding dust.
- Avoid using knotting agents with Sadolin varnish systems.
- Eliminate organic growths and treat infected surfaces with a suitable fungicidal solution.
- Utilise fillers specifically designed for timber, such as Sadolin Wood Filler and Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler, for minor surface defects, imperfections, and open joints.
- Only use non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings.
For previously treated timber
- Remove any defective coatings entirely.
- Abrade all existing finishes thoroughly to create an appropriate surface for adhesion.
- Clean sound surfaces with warm water and a mild detergent, followed by a thorough rinse with clean water.
- Proceed with treatment as outlined for new timber.
Application
Before starting any project, conduct a small test area to evaluate colour, consistency, and compatibility of the final finish. Always adhere to the manufacturer's instructions provided on the tin. Thoroughly stir the product before and during application to prevent sheen and colour discrepancies. Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish is ready for use and should not be thinned.
Avoid application when air or substrate temperatures are below 8C or above 25C, or if the relative humidity exceeds 80% during application or drying periods. Protect the surface from water until fully dry. Failure to meet these conditions may impact drying time, visual quality, and durability of the finish.
- Apply in smooth, even coats, following the direction of the wood grain, ensuring complete coverage on all surfaces and end grains.
- For optimal results, use a high-quality synthetic fibre bristle brush designed for water-based products.
- Apply three full coats of Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish, allowing a two-hour drying period between coats.
- Avoid excessive brushing to prevent brush marks and achieve a high-quality finish.
- Between coats, carefully denib using a fine-grade nylon abrasive pad or wet/dry silicon carbide abrasive paper (P240 or finer) in the direction of the grain. Do not break through the surface coating.
- Thoroughly remove any sanding dust.
- Apply subsequent coatings promptly after the previous coat has fully dried.
Clean brushes and equipment with warm, soapy water, and rinse with clean water immediately after use. In case of spills, promptly remove Sadolin Polyurethane Extra Durable Varnish while still wet, using clean water.

Q: Can Sadolin Extra Durable Poly Varnish be sprayed?
A: No, this product cannot be spray applied. For best results, use a high-quality synthetic fibre bristle brush specifically designed for water-based products such as ProDec Premier Synthetic Brush.
Q: Can I use Sadolin Extra Varnish on a painted wall?
A: This product is designed for use on bare interior wood and may not adhere well to painted surfaces. We recommend Smith and Rodger Rocktop Multi-Surface Clearcoat as a suitable alternative.
Q: Is Sadolin Poly Varnish suitable as a top coat for protecting laminate flooring?
A: If the laminate is real wood and can be sanded back to bare wood, Sadolin Polyurethane can be applied. However, it cannot be applied to plastic laminates. Double-check with the laminate manufacturer if unsure.
