Sadolin PV67 Heavy Duty Varnish stands out as a top choice for protecting wooden bar tops, as well as various other high-traffic indoor surfaces like dance floors, community halls, and more. However, it's important to note that this product is specifically designed for interior use and is not suitable for outdoor applications or laminated surfaces.
For a colored lacquer finish, Sadolin PV67 can be applied over a base coat of Sadolin Classic Wood Protection or a similar low-build wood stain, once the base coat has fully dried.
If you're seeking a durable polyurethane varnish tailored for domestic settings, consider Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Varnish, a single-part, water-based floor varnish.
Preparation
Prior to applying Sadolin PV67 Heavy Duty Varnish, ensure that bar tops and other wooden surfaces are thoroughly cleaned, dry, and free from any surface dirt, debris, or contaminants. The timber should be in good condition, with a moisture content not exceeding 14%.
For new or bare timber
- Utilize compatible fillers such as Sadolin Wood Filler or Sadolin Stainable Wood Filler to address any minor surface defects, imperfections, or open joints.
- Avoid using general or 'All Purpose' fillers, as they may not be suitable.
- Refrain from using knotting agents with Sadolin varnish systems.
- Employ non-ferrous screws, nails, and fixings.
- Remove resinous deposits using a scraper, followed by degreasing the exposed bare timber surface with a clean, lint-free cloth dampened with methylated spirits.
- Allow the methylated spirit to fully dry before proceeding with the coating process.
For previously coated wood
- Sadolin PV67 Heavy Duty Varnish should not be applied over conventional single pack varnishes, whether solvent-based or waterborne.
- If unsure about the nature of an existing finish, it's essential to completely strip it back to bare wood and treat it as 'New Timber'.
Application
Before you start working on your project, it's essential to conduct a test area to gauge product compatibility and the final finish. Adhere strictly to the manufacturer's instructions provided on the tin. Sadolin PV67 Heavy Duty Varnish is formulated for immediate use and doesn't require thinning. It's advised not to expedite drying by adding extra hardener, and it's crucial to shield the surface from water until it's fully dry.
Optimal drying and curing conditions involve warm, dry environments. Excessive humidity or low temperatures can impede the chemical reaction in the finish, resulting in incomplete drying or curing. This can also affect the release of formaldehyde. To mitigate such issues, apply PV67 Heavy Duty Varnish within a temperature range of 18 to 25C and a relative humidity not exceeding 65%. If humidity levels are uncertain, it's recommended to use a dehumidifier before, during, and immediately after application.
Adequate airflow and ventilation, particularly at ground level, are paramount during and after application. In spaces with poor air circulation, consider using an electric fan to facilitate air movement without directing drafts at the surface. The timber's moisture content should stabilize to the room's conditions and not exceed 14%.
Ensure thorough stirring of the product before and during application to prevent variations in sheen and color. Sadolin PV67 Heavy Duty Varnish is mixed at a ratio of 10 parts varnish to 1 part hardener, by volume. This mixture should be vigorously shaken just before use and only in suitable vessels made of plastic, glass, or undamaged enamel due to the hardener's acidic nature.
Note: Once the varnish components are mixed, they can be stored in a closed container below 20C for up to 3-4 hours. However, it's advisable to mix only enough material for individual coats at a time.
Apply Sadolin PV67 in generous, flowing coats, ensuring thorough coverage of wooden surfaces. For optimal results, use a soft, natural bristle brush, lambswool applicator, or a quality woven roller with a short to medium pile. Finish with three full coats of varnish, allowing a minimum of 3-4 hours drying time between coats. Avoid over-brushing, as it can lead to brush marks and compromise the finish quality and protective properties.
After the first coat, gently denib the surface using a fine-grade nylon abrasive pad or a fine-grade wet or dry silicone carbide abrasive paper in the direction of the grain before applying subsequent coats. Ensure thorough removal of all sanding dust.
It's important to note several points:
- Restrict heavy traffic for at least eight hours post-application.
- Wait 24 hours before installing furniture.
- Rugs should be installed one week after application.
- Newly finished surfaces require one week to cure completely before any cleaning is undertaken.
- Some timbers, particularly pine with a high proportion of heartwood, may darken upon application.
Aftercare
Routine Cleaning
To maintain surfaces coated with Sadolin PV67, avoid using wax polishes, strong detergents, or caustic soda. Instead, opt for a pH-balanced wooden floor cleaner and a slightly damp microfiber cloth or mop for cleaning. If necessary, surfaces can be buffed with a dry cloth or mop to restore their sheen.
Maintenance
Should maintenance be required, lightly sand the surfaces with fine-grade abrasive paper. Thoroughly remove any dust before applying a single coat of PV67 Varnish (two-component).
Repairs
For small worn areas, gently blend a maintenance coat into the surrounding varnish after preparing the surface with fine-grade abrasive paper. Completely remove coatings that are in poor condition. Prior to maintenance with Sadolin PV67 Varnish, ensure any emulsion dressings are removed.
Newly coated surfaces should undergo a full week of curing before any cleaning is undertaken.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply PV67 on a pebble floor and grout?
Sadolin PV67 is specifically formulated for wooden surfaces as it requires binding to the wood fibers.
Will Sadolin PV67 cause yellowing on my pine table?
Being a solvent-based varnish, Sadolin PV67 can enhance the natural tones of timber, particularly noticeable on species like pine. If you're concerned about yellowing, consider switching to a water-based varnish. Feel free to contact our Woodcare Experts at 01303 213838 to explore alternative options.
