Looking to buy Childrens Roller Skates & Shoes?

OnBuy has a brilliant collection of kids’ roller skates for sale, and with top brands and an array of colours and characters available - spanning girls' roller skates and boys' roller skates alike - you’re bound to find a pair that matches your little one’s personality!

If they’re not quite ready for kids' roller skates, why not dabble with a pair of kids’ roller shoes? Give them the option to switch between walking or gliding and they’ll be able to perfect their balance before graduating to a pair of our roller skates for kids. Street rollers are also a great alternative to roller skates for kids - simply clip them onto the base of your tot’s shoes and away they go.

Once they’ve mastered the art of skates, why not treat them to a pair of kids’ roller blades to amp up the fun even further? There are plenty of colours, styles and sizes available to ensure a playtime that packs a punch!

I hope that includes Heelys

OnBuy has a great range of roller shoes for kids, and of course that includes Heelys! If you’re not familiar with the brand (where were you in the Noughties?), they kicked off the roller shoes trend and quickly became a must-have on the Christmas wish list shortly after the turn of the millennium. The idea was simple, a wheel in the heel of the shoe that could easily pop out to ride on - you couldn’t walk down a high street in the UK without seeing dozens of kids whizzing along on a pair of Heelys!

While the brand doesn’t get quite the same attention as it did around 20 years ago, they are still hugely popular and available on OnBuy, along with many other brands. The range has gotten much broader over the two decades since Heelys first graced our feet and now there’s an impressive selection of roller shoes available for kids to choose from, whether they want the original or not.

The best roller skates for beginners

There are two main types of roller skates: quad skates (think cheesy 70s roller disco), which have four wheels to distribute the weight more evenly, and inline skates (also known as roller blades), which are faster but require a lot more balance. You’ll probably not want your kids to start on these unless they’ve got the natural grace of Torvill and Dean, as they’ll probably end up with quite a few bruises!

Bearing that in mind, we would recommend getting a good pair of quad skates for newbies, along with a helmet while your kids are making their first forays into the world of skating. It will keep them safe and give you peace of mind, although young children should always be supervised to avoid any dangerous accidents. You can also buy knee and elbow pads if you’re particularly concerned about them picking up scrapes and grazes while they learn to use roller skates.

Frequently asked questions about roller skates

How should roller skates fit?

A pair of roller skates should be a snug fit on your child's feet, with quite a bit of pressure on the sides of their feet. This is because the skates need to be quite tight to avoid rolled ankles. There shouldn't be room in the skates for your child's foot to move back and forth, because they'll quickly develop blisters. That said, if the skates are painful to wear, or if your child can't wiggle their toes (or their toes are curled up against the tip of the skate), then they're too tight.

Are roller skates supposed to be heavy?

Roller skates are heavier than normal shoes because that makes them more stable and easier to control.

Is roller skating good exercise for kids

Yes, roller skating is a great way of burning off energy and improving your child's fitness. Because proper skating form includes moving your arms back and forth it's a lot like doing cross fit. Some organisations claim that roller skating can burn up to 600 calories an hour!
