About Schwinn Bikes
Whether your child wants to hop on a bike for the first time or they’re already an experienced wheeler, you’ll want them to ride on the very best bikes. Well, you’ve found them! The Schwinn Bikes edit from OnBuy collects dozens of different children’s bikes from this venerable American manufacturer. Read on to learn more!
The history of Schwinn bikes
Founded in Chicago, Schwinn started to produce their first bicycles at the end of the 19th Century. Almost immediately Schwinn bikes hit the headlines when Charles ‘Mile-a-Minute’ Murphy used a Schwinn machine to become the first person to cycle faster than 60 miles per hour.
The 20th Century saw the company go from strength to strength. By 1930 they had become renowned for their innovation: Schwinn bikes were the first to have mudguards, fore-wheel brakes, cantilever frames and more.
Schwinn weren’t happy just making bicycles for adults, though. In the 1960s they released the String-Ray. With high-rise ‘ape’ bars inspired by American ‘chopper’ motorcycles, a racing slick tyre and beautiful chrome detailing, this children’s bike became an instant pop culture icon. Thanks to the Sting-Ray and other classic models, Schwinn bikes were cemented as some of the most popular choices for children of all ages.
Schwinn Bikes in the modern age
Some of the fantastic pedigree of Schwinn Bikes echoes into the present with their designs. You can still buy new versions of the iconic Sting-Ray bicycle as well as other designs that have changed little over the decades.
Although Schwinn bikes are still inspired by the best trends of the past, they’ve got one eye on the future as well. Some Schwinn bikes have more contemporary designs, with chunky tyres, advanced mountain bike-style gearing systems and other modern features.
Schwinn bikes are as varied in size as they are in design. You’ll find some Schwinn Bikes that are about 12 inches high, and are the perfect starting bike for 3 to 5 year olds. On the other end of the scale, some Schwinn children’s bicycles are almost fully grown! These 24 and 26-inch bikes are perfect for children on the cusp of their teenage years, just before they graduate to adult bicycles.
As well as ordinary Schwinn bikes you’ll also find a selection of Schwinn-made tricycles as well. Perfect for young children with balance issues, these three-wheelers provide extra stability and are incredibly hard to knock over or fall off of. They’re more stable, but they’re just as nippy! When your child rides a Schwinn tricycle they’ll still be fast enough to keep up with their bicycle-riding friends.
