The evergreen Eucalyptus pauciflora grows as a shrub in the sub-alpine regions of Australia, where it is found in heights of 1300 to 1800 meters above sea level. Like its name already suggests, the Alpine Snow Gum can endure frosts of up to -20° Celsius and is considered the most frost-resistant species within the Eucalyptus plants. It initially grows yellow and dark red coloured leaves and later develops the lance-shaped white-green broad leaves, while it blooms richly with white-coloured brush-like flowers. Even the small seedlings already show the elliptical leave-shape of the plant. Its smooth crust usually takes on a red-brown colour and debarks in stripes over time.
Natural Location: The original habitat of the Eucalyptus pauciflora is in the sub-alpine regions like the Snowy Mountains in Southeast Australia. In the lowlands it is mainly found in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
Cultivation: Seed propagation indoors is possible throughout the year. To increase the germinability, you should keep the seeds sealed in a plastic bag in the regular refrigerator for about a week. After that, spread the seeds on moist potting compost, put just a little compost earth on top and cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the earth from drying out. Don't forget to make some holes in the clear film and take it every second or third day completely off for about 2 hours. That way you avoid mold formation on your potting compost. Place the seed container somewhere bright and warm with a temperature between 20° C and 25° Celsius and keep the earth moist, but not wet. Usually it takes two to three weeks until germination.
Place: The Alpine Snow Gum can be kept in a bright and warm spot inside the house through the whole year. From April until September you may also keep your plant in a protected and sunny or full sunny place outdoors.
Care: Your plant needs to be watered sufficiently and penetratingly with lime-deficient water, but avoid waterlogging, for instance in the saucer. Ideally, you may set up a drainage layer with clay granulate at the bottom of the pot. From April until September you should give fertilizer for tub plants every four weeks.
During Winter: During hibernation the Alpine Snow Gum can be kept in a bright spot with a temperature around 10° Celsius - but it is also possible to keep your plant at room temperature during winter. After the second year, you can plant the shrub outdoors or just leave it outside in a tub since it is frost-resistant up to -20 ° Celsius. In late winter the tree can be pruned back to your own liking.
Bonsai ability: Yes
