Red coloured trunk and stalks contrasting blue-green palm fronds
Shiny, wax-like scarlet red leaf stalks and an increasingly red coloured trunk make the Sealing Wax Palm a much desired pinnate palm. The red colour of its stem and the leaf stalks create a nice contrast to the dark, blue-green painted pinnate leaves. It grows rather slender and is perfectly suited for cultivation as a tub plant. Its fully green palm fronds stand very much upright without bending. Compared to other palm trees, the Sealing Wax Palm also grows faster.
Natural Location: The Sealing Wax Palm has its natural habitat on the Malay Peninsula and on Sumatra and Borneo, where it grows in tropical marsh forests close to the coast.
Cultivation: Seed propagation indoors is possible throughout the year. To increase the germinability, you can place the seeds for about 12 hours in warm water for priming. Then, spread the seeds onto moist potting compost, put just a little compost earth on top and cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the earth from drying out. Don't forget to make some holes in the clear film and take it every second or third day completely off for about 2 hours. That way you avoid mold formation on your potting compost. Place the seed container somewhere bright and warm with a temperature between 20° C and 25° C and keep the earth moist, but not wet. As with all palm trees, you may need a little patience, but usually it takes four to twelve weeks until germination.
Place: Due to its high heat demand, the Sealing Wax Palm wants to be kept in very bright spot, ideally next to a big window.
Care: Plant your Sealing Wax Palm in a bigger pot straight away and water it regularly with lukewarm water to keep the clotted roots constantly moist. As a bog plant it tolerates - other than many other tropical plants - even waterlogging, for instance in the saucer. During the growth period it needs fluid fertilizer for tub plants every three to four weeks.
During Winter: The Sealing Wax Palm doesn't tolerate even short periods with a temperature below 10° Celsius. It needs plenty of water, light and warmth - also during winter, when it is best kept in a bright place with a temperature of at least 17° Celsius. Thanks to its strong, leathery leaves it can cope easily with the dry air from the heater in the winter time.
Bonsai ability: No
