In 1976, British prop designer Andrew Ainsworth created one of the most iconic and frightening costumes to ever grace the silver screen: The Imperial Stormtrooper armour for Star Wars. Ainsworth’s company, Shepperton Design Studios, is still in business today, and specialises in making perfect replicas of the original costumes, as well as some Stormtrooper themed accessories and gifts. 

The Shepperton Original Stormtrooper Terrarium is one of these accessories. It’s a glass terrarium moulded after the bulbous contours of a Stormtrooper’s helmet. Every part of this terrarium’s shape is instantly recognisable. From the sinister triangular ocular lenses, to the thick, veined respirator gear. It’s sure to take pride of place on any Star Wars fan’s desk!

This terrarium isn’t just a galactic-themed paperweight, it’s a great place to store houseplants. The Shepperton Original Stormtrooper Terrarium acts as a mini ecosystem for succulents, cacti and other houseplants that are used to warm climates. It acts as a small glass greenhouse, trapping heat from the sun and warming it up to the plant’s ideal temperature. Additionally, moisture trapped on the walls of a glass terrarium condenses and drips down the edges back into the plant’s soil, efficiently recycling water for the plant, so it requires less moisture than normal. This mini ecosystem is especially good for growing ferns, carnivorous plants and air plants, all of which struggle to grow in dry air.

The Shepperton Original Stormtrooper Terrarium is a sealed glass terrarium, with a rubber-rimmed wooden stopper that allows easy access for watering. The stopper is located at the back of the trooper’s helmet, so its distinctive faceplate remains unobscured and intact at all times. The wide base is also an excellent bit of design, allowing you to fit plenty of soil, stones and other firmament to give your plant’s roots a strong foundation for growing.
