Buying a new toaster isn’t as simple as you may expect. With so many sizes, styles and shapes to choose from, it can often be tricky to find a favourite (especially if you don’t know which features to prioritise).

If you’re ready to upgrade, check out our handy guide on everything you need to know! It’s pretty much the best thing since sliced bread!

Types

Which type of toaster should I choose?

Before you can delve into their individual features and functions, you’ll need to decide on a toaster type. Lucky for you, there are only three available, so it should be simple to narrow down the selection:

  1. 2-Slice Toasters

Ideal for households that only eat a few slices at a time, these compact toasters are generally small and lightweight, as well as affordable and easy to clean. They’re sure to slot perfectly into tighter spaces, but won’t boast as many functions as a 4 slice model.
  1. 4-Slice Toasters

Better for larger families, or those who tend to enjoy plenty of toast in the morning. They're heavy and durable, making them more stable than the 2-slice alternatives. They often offer a range of exciting settings, too!
  1. Long-Slot Toasters

From artisan loaves to handmade bloomers, spacious long-slot toasters can accommodate a wide variety of breads and bakes. They will have a larger footprint, though, so are likely to take up more space on your countertop.

Don’t forget! You can use our handy filters to find your perfect match in an instant! Simply browse your favourite brands, colours, features and materials using the drop-down menus on the left-hand side of our toasters page!

Standard

Standard settings to look out for

Most toasters will come with a set of ‘standard’ settings, which you should always look out for when browsing the collection. These will make breakfasts super quick and easy, even if your bread is frozen!

  • Defrost: This feature defrosts and toasts slices at the same time.
  • Reheat: Warm bread that's already toasted, without browning it further.
  • Alternative programs: Ideal if you want to heat more than just bread.
  • Shade settings: Often represented by the number of minutes a toaster will run before popping, this indicates where on the browning scale your finished toast will fall.
  • Crumb tray: A removable tray, concealed at the base, which catches crumbs as they fall.
  • High lift: This feature allows you to easily remove toast without burning your fingers!
  • Width slots: The wider the internal metal frame, the thicker your slices can be!

Top Tip! It’s always worth exploring popular models from industry-leading brands when it comes to choosing a toaster. We'd recommend Russell Hobbs toasters, Breville toasters and Morphy Richards toasters.

Features

Alternative features to bear in mind

If you’re keen to go beyond the ‘standard’ features of a toaster, you’ll want to think about specific add-ons that can make your model even more personal (and appealing, of course!).

Here are some of our favourites:

  1. Accessories

Some toasters come with a host of convenient extras, like metal racks (which sit on top and warm items like croissants and pastries), and sandwich clamps, which help to make delicious toasties and paninis.
  2. Quick Check

Ideal if you’re fussy about bread shade, this function allows you to check on the progress of your toast as it’s cooking. Toasting will pause as you raise the lever, and commence again when you lower it.
  3. Colour

With so many gorgeous styles and designs available, you really are spoilt for choice on the colour front. White, black, grey and red are always crowd-pleasers, but unique shades like yellow and pink are sure to make a statement!
Clean

A note on cleaning your toaster

To properly maintain your toaster (and increase its lifespan), you should clean it regularly. Start by unplugging your appliance and allowing it to cool. Remove the crumb tray and empty it into the bin, before washing it with warm (not hot!), soapy water. While this is drying, use a soft brush or kitchen towel to loosen any remaining crumbs.

Never submerge your toaster in water, and don’t use harsh chemicals to clean its interior, either. Instead, simply wipe the exterior with a damp cloth every few days. Stainless steel toasters are likely to become marked with fingerprints over time, so you may have to buff them each time they’re used.
