SAFLAX Garden in the Bag - Dove Tree - Davidia involucrata - 1 seeds - With cultivation substrate in an easy to handle stand up bag.The tree that beckons - frost-resistant up to -15° CelsiusCreate the perfect environment for a successful cultivation process. Garden in the Bag provides the nurturing substrate in the practical standup bag. Just add water and watch as the dried, light block produces abundant cultivation substrate for your seeds in just a few minutes. The Dove Tree is, due to its impressive appearance during blossoming, a popular ornamental tree that casts the leaves and is quite frost-resistant. Its dense foliage consists of heart-shaped leaves that have a blue-green colour and silky hairs on the bottom side. Between April and June, the inconspicuous brownish flowers are each being framed by two white-coloured spathaceous bracts that are attracting insects and creating during small breezes of air the appearance of beckoning handkerchiefs or butterflies. Since that also looks like a flock of doves from afar, the Davidia involucrata is commonly known as Dove Tree. Natural Location: The natural habitat of the Dove Tree is the humid mountain region in Middle and West China, particularly in the provinces Sichuan and Hubei. There, it was first discovered in 1869 by the Jesuit missionary Père David, after whom the Davidia is also named.Cultivation: Seed propagation indoors is possible throughout the year. Since the seeds are quite big and covered by a hard shell, it can take in its natural habitat sometimes a couple of years until germination. However, with a few tricks you can speed up the process significantly. Put the seed in a plastic box with rough sand and keep it in the regular refrigerator for about four to eight weeks. This will stimulate the seed and increases the germinability. After that, plant the seeds about 2 to 4 cm deep into moist potting compost and cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the earth from drying out. Don’t forget to make some holes in the clear film and take it every second or third day completely off for about 2 hours. That way you avoid mold formation on your potting compost. Place the seed container somewhere bright and warm and keep the earth moist, but not wet. In the Dove Tree the germination happens rather slow and it might take 12 to 16 weeks.Place: The Dove Tree likes the warmth and can also endure the heat, so it prefers sunny or light shaded places. Ideally, it is kept wind-protected by neighbouring plants. Loamy and solidified soils are not suited for cultivation.Care: During the hot summer you should water the tree sufficiently and penetratingly two or three times a week, so the earth doesn’t dry out. Its nutrient requirement is rather modest - providing the plant with compost or mineral fertilizer in April and in July would be enough. Fertilizing later might obstruct the maturing and strengthening of the sprouts ahead of the winter season. Pest infestations are rare - only the fresh sprouts in spring can have aphids. During Winter: Tub plants and younger trees should hibernate indoors and frost-free. Since the Davidia involucrata casts the leaves in autumn, it doesn’t need much light. Outdoor plants can endure a short frost period with temperatures of -15 °Celsius. For the first few years it is necessary to protect the root area by earthing up or with a thick layer of brush-wood or foliage. Additionally you may cover the crown with fleece. Older trees will be frost-hardy, but it is saver to cover the stem with strips of jute fabric that can be removed in mid April.Bonsai ability: Yes
