Cleaning floors and carpets with a vacuum cleaner is a simple chore, but with the right techniques you can get brilliant results and cut down on the time it takes! Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your vacuum cleaner.

Select the right kind of vacuum

First, make sure you’re using the right vacuum cleaner for the job. Different types of vacuum cleaners are designed for different types of surfaces and materials. For example, if you’re vacuuming a thick carpeted area, you’ll want to use a powerful cylinder vacuum cleaner or an upright vacuum cleaner with a motorised brush bar. But if you're tidying your mantelpieces or desks a handheld vacuum cleaner might be better. If you want more advice on the best vacuum cleaner for you, read our vacuum cleaner buying guide.

Use the right settings

Next, make sure you’re using the right vacuum cleaner settings. Many vacuum cleaners have adjustable settings for different types of surfaces. For example, if you’re vacuuming a carpeted area, you’ll want to use the highest setting. If you’re vacuuming hardwood floors, you’ll want to use the lower setting.

Add carpet cleaner

If your carpet is stained or looks a little faded, applying some carpet cleaning products can bubble up tough dirt and stains trapped in your carpet. You'll want to add your cleaner before or after vacuuming, depending on what the manufacturer's instructions say.

You should also use the carpet cleaner on a part of your carpet that's hidden from view, first. (The carpet underneath where your sofa normally goes is great for this.) That way, if the cleaner's ingredients bleach your carpet, none of your guests will be able to tell.

Start in the right place

If you want to vacuum in the most efficient way, starting in the right place will make sure you won't miss a spot. When vacuuming a carpeted area, you should always start in a corner and work your way inwards. When vacuuming hardwood floors, you should always start in the centre of the room and work your way out.

Go slow

Once you've started vacuuming - particularly if you're using a less powerful vacuum, like a cordless stick vacuum - it's a good idea to move slowly. The slower you go, the more time the vacuum has to churn up the dust and dirt trapped on your floors. This allows you to suck up more dirt than you could otherwise.

When you vacuum a carpet, mix it up

When we use a vacuum cleaner, we naturally want to push the brush head in straight lines, going backwards and forwards. It looks neater but it's not the best way to vacuum your carpet. According to the experts, you should move in different directions to agitate the carpet pile. This releases dust and dirt trapped in the fibres and lets your vacuum pick it all up.

Look after your vacuum cleaner

If you want clean floors, you need to keep your vacuum cleaner working well. One of the first signs a vacuum cleaner needs maintenance is its reduced suction power. Make sure to empty its bag or dustbin regularly, and keep its filters clean. For more advice on how to look after it, read our blog on maintaining your vacuum cleaner.

By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your vacuum cleaner is working at its best and that you’re getting the most out of your vacuum cleaner. Vacuuming is an important part of keeping your home clean and tidy, so make sure you’re doing it right!
