Inarguably the most famous scent from this house is Lavin Arpège perfume, their black bottled floral aldehyde fragrance that was first released in 1927 and has remained one of the most highly prized EDPs among perfumistas for close to a century. It takes its name from, and is inspired by, the musical concept of arpeggios - single notes played in sequence to create a chord. The aromas of this perfume rise and fall like the great piano sonatas.
The original Lavin Arpège is refined and elegant, yet so easy to wear. It begins in classic fashion with a blend of lily-of-the-valley, peach, honeysuckle, neroli and bergamot that create a sweet and sour aroma that is heightened by the clean, frosty effect of aldehydes. This crisp note (a key component of many classic perfumes including the legendary Chanel No. 5) will remain throughout the perfume's development into a more floral accented middle. Lily-of-the-valley remains and is joined in accord by ylang-ylang and sweet jasmine, plus powdery iris and lemon-fresh rose. Coriander notes add some spice here which is continued into the base, with the incense-rich scent of sandalwood leading the way.
Such a characterful perfume with a long history would normally demand a high price, but Lanvin's approach to perfumery is different. They don't think that exquisite women's perfume should be reserved only for those with means, and their continued production of Arpège has made sure its costs do not rise too high.
As well as the original Arpège, Lavin has also released a series of flankers. The most popular of these is the Eclat d'Arpège perfume, a greener, fresher take on the original. This Lanvin perfume contains a masterful floral opening filled with green lilac before transitioning into an incredible middle section that marries green tea with sweet peach blossom. Finally, a subtle base layer of musk, cedar and amber greets your nose.

Beyond the Arpège collection, Levin's perfume department has created many other wonderful scents. One of them is the sweet and innocent Jeanne Lavin perfume. This fragrance really emphasises the smell of fruit. It opens with perky blackberries that carry a delicious tang bolstered by the addition of lemon. Florals bloom in the middle notes - peony, rose and freesia - helped by the light fizziness of raspberry. As befitting such a light, shining perfume, the base is subtle and unobtrusive. Musk and amber tones create an alluring edge to the fragrance and sandalwood lends an incense-like woodiness, but none are powerful enough to disrupt the florals, only support them.
