I2C stands for -Integrated Circuit Communication and is meant for short distance communication a PCB or assembly. But hey, we're engineers and we like to push the limits of technology, right? So not try to get I2C to run over a meter of cable or even longer? Well, if you try that, you'll quickly find that the length of the cable adds capacitance and resistance that slows down the open-drain pull-ups used in I2C, making it hard to use 100KHz+ clock speeds.
You can try slowing down the I2C clock to 1 KHz... or you can use an active terminator like this LTC4311!
Using this board is simple: connect it to the I2C bus at the beginning of the chain (you can also try it at the end of the chain if you don't have really long cables). When the chip is powered and enabled, it will monitor the SCL and SDA lines. When it sees them pulled via the I2C resistors, it will activate and dump some current to boost them via the top power rail.
You can now achieve faster data rates without the use of resistors and long cables. We easily ran a 400 KHz OLED over 3 meters of phone . For 100KHz signals, we even ran a BME680 over 100 feet of Ethernet (about 3000pF round trip!) and used the OLED to display sensor details.
