The AS5048A is a 14-bit rotary position sensor (formerly known as encoder) with absolute angle measurement and PWM (= Pulse Width Modulation) output at 360 based contactless magnetic sensor technology at full rotation.
The device is suitable for shaft applications in which a simple dipole magnet rotates above or below the sensor IC and the zero position can be programmed into the device with simple SPI commands. The absolute magnetic angular position resolution is 14 bits = 16384 position measurements per revolution as digital values for the serial interface (SPI).
The AS5048A provides a PWM output as well as an SPI or I2C interface to provide absolute angle measurements for microcontrollers. Instead of having to consider the exact pairing of the chip's initial zero position and the poles of the magnets it uses during mechanical design, the zero position can be programmed into the AS5048's internal memory as early as during assembly via simple SPI or I2C commands (no special programming equipment is required).

The AS5048A also has very high operating tolerances, including deviations in the center position between chip and mating magnet, deviations in the air between chip and mating magnet, and temperature variations between -40C and +150C. The AS5048 also has a very high operating tolerance.
The AS5048A magnetic rotary encoder provides more accurate measurements than previous magnetic rotary encoder products from Austria Microelectronics. Its 14-bit measurement analog front-end provides measurement resolutions down to 0.0219 degrees. Linearization and averaging via a microcontroller enables angular measurements accurate to 0.05 degrees.
