The VL53L4CX -of-flight sensor is another excellent -of-flight distance sensor in the ST VL5 series chips. It's exceptionally good, with a maximum range of 6 meters for long-range detection, compared to the VL53L1X's 4 meters. The sensor contains a very small, invisible laser source and a matching sensor. The VL53L4CX can detect " of flight," or how long the light has been in flight. The light has bounced back to the sensor. Because it uses a very narrow light source, it's advantageous for determining the distance to surfaces just in front of it. Unlike sonar that reflects ultrasound, the sensing "cone" is extremely narrow. Unlike infrared distance sensors that try to manipulate the light, the VL53 is much more precise in ensuring the amount of reflected light, and there are no linearity issues or "double imaging" problems that you can't achieve if the object is very far away or very close. This is the " sister" of the VL53L4CD ToF sensor, capable of handling distances from approximately 1 to 6000 mm. It also has some multi-object detection capabilities.
