The HUSB238 USB PD receiver chip is incredibly useful. You can set the desired PD voltage and current using jumpers (actually resistor selectors), or you can query and set them dynamically using I2C. We've built an excellent Adafruit USB Type-C PD simulation breakout board around the HUSB238, making configuration and integration incredibly easy, without soldering any tiny resistors.
It's ideal for use with USB Type-C wall adapters that offer a variety of voltages, including the standard 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, 18V, and 20V. Once plugged into a USB-C cable, the HUSB238 breakout board negotiates PD requests and commands over the CC lines. For example, we can query the available voltages and select the highest one. Alternatively, if you request a specific voltage, it will select that voltage as well.
If your project requires significantly more power than 5V @ 2A, this adapter is especially useful: it can deliver to 20V @ 5A-yes, you can get 100W of power through USB-C! And, if needed, you can also step it down to get a powerful 5V or 12V. Or, you can use it to convert or battery-powered devices to USB C-powered devices.
