The LSM9DS1 is a multifunctional motion-sensing system--chip. It is equipped with a 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis magnetometer - with 9 degrees of freedom (9DOF) in a single IC! The LSM9DS1 is equipped with a digital interface, but even so it is very flexible: it supports I2C and SPI, so it is difficult to find an unavailable microcontroller. This IMU chip is really cool. The LSM9DS1 is one of the few ics that can measure the three key characteristics of motion (angular velocity, acceleration and heading) in a single IC. By measuring these three attributes, you can acquire a great deal of knowledge about the movement and direction of the object. The LSM9DS1 measures each of these motion characteristics in three dimensions.
This means it will generate nine data points: acceleration expressed as x/y/z, angular rotation expressed as x/y/z, and magnetic force expressed as x/y/z. The LSM9DS1 Breakout has tags indicating the axes of the accelerometer and gyroscope, and these tags share a right-handed rule relationship with each other.
Each sensor in the LSM9DS1 supports a wide range: the accelerometer scale can be set to 2, 4, 8 or 16 g, the gyroscope supports 245, 500 and 2000/ s, and the magnetometer has a scale range of 4, 8, 12 or 16 gauss.
