What is a BBQ chimney starter?
Chimney starters, also known as charcoal chimneys, will give you a large quantity of hot coals for grilling, in a short amount of time. So, if you want to avoid biting into a piece of meat that tastes like lighter fluid, then these are the gadgets for you! Typically shaped like a cylinder, which include a welded grate inside, chimney starters have holes to promote airflow. Most also feature insulated handles on either side, for gripping. Once the newspaper at the bottom of the chimney is lit, it will ignite the lump or charcoal pieces that are placed above it, and these can then be transferred to the grill.
What to look out for when buying your charcoal chimney
When purchasing your chimney starter, the first thing to look out for is ventilation holes on the side. A chimney without these won’t have enough airflow to sufficiently heat up the coal, leaving you with cooler briquettes or pieces of charcoal. Many brands also showcase models with heat-protectant handles, which are another feature to consider. Look for a device with a handle sturdy enough to allow you to move the canister onto a fire-safe surface, as the last thing you want is for the handle to break off. Most importantly, though, ensure your chosen model has a large capacity, and is at least 22” wide.
