The history of Border

In 1984, an enthusiastic John Cunningham bought a tiny factory in Lanark and, with almost no machinery and only four helpers, set out to create the best biscuits he could. His theory was simple enough – if the products were scrumptious, sophisticated, and inviting, word of mouth would spread across the country… and that’s exactly what happened.

By 1987, Border had acquired enough profits to expand their range of biscuits, soon developing new recipes including the much-praised Dark Chocolate Ginger, a taste collision of spice and smooth, sumptuous textures. Nine years later, a larger factory was required to maintain the nation’s demand for their tasty, traditional titbits. Growing massively to keep up with the demands of production (over 300,000 packets a week, to be precise), they were simply destined to be successful. It’ll come as no surprise that, over the years, Border have produced more than 20 million of their Gingers alone, using around 155 tonnes of chocolate to complete the famous recipe.

What makes Border biscuits so unique?

Border’s policy of ‘biscuits before profit’ is clearly a huge part of their success, as they believe that tempting treats are more important for business than economic-driven management. Their accomplishments are simply astonishing, with figures now reaching a total of around forty different products, from the humble beginnings of only four: the Viennese Whirl, Ginger Crunch, Cherry Shortcake, and Oat Crumble. What’s more, new recipes are constantly being created within their specialist Development Kitchen, meaning that Border’s journey is still very much unfolding.

In 2019, they even outlined a commitment to the environment, by eliminating 90% of plastic from their core retail packaging. This reduction saves an estimated 537 tonnes of C02 from the manufacturing process every year, another major achievement for the company.
