The story of Schwartz
Despite its German name (Schwartz means ‘black’ in German) the Schwartz brand is actually Canadian in origin. It’s named after William Schwartz, the son of a German immigrant, who established it in 1889 in the windswept city of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
At the time, it was very common to cut spices down with additives like cornflower in order to bulk the expensive flavourings out. The Schwartz company changed that by being the first Canadian company to sell pure spices only. It was a commitment to quality that has lasted for the rest of the company’s 130 year history. Nowadays Schwartz products are a regular sight in the cupboards of home cooks and professional chefs the world over.
Although they started selling only spices, Schwartz have opened their doors to a whole family of flavourings! If you cook anything, from a simple plate of scrambled eggs to a gourmet three course meal, you’ll absolutely need some of the basic seasonings that Schwartz offers. You can choose a variety of peppercorns ready to be cracked - black, red and green - each with a slightly different taste. As for salt, will you gravitate towards traditional sea salt, intriguing Himalayan pink salt or tangy Mediterranean herb salt?
Once you’ve mastered the basics, move onto other popular Schwartz herbs and spices! Popular Mediterranean herbs like dried oregano and basil are must-have additions to tomato sauces and stews, while dried chives can be a wonderful addition to a fish dish.
Schwartz’s spice selection ranges far out of Europe, of course. If you’re cooking chili con carne, you simply must include dried cayenne pepper, cumin and paprika for that authentic, smokey and moreish taste. Chinese five spice will bring out the best of any stir-fry, and curries wouldn’t be curries without Schwartz turmeric, clove, cardamom and cinnamon!
