With a history stretching back over 100 years, British chocolatiers Thorntons know their way around a cocoa plant. With its range of delicious chocolate boxes packed full of treats, Thorntons has long been a fixture of festive presents and romantic gifts for decades. The Thorntons family name
These days Thorntons is best known for producing brilliant luxury chocolates, but the origins of Thorntons is much more humble. The brand’s history begins with a travelling sweets salesman named Joseph William Thornton. In 1911 he settled down in Sheffield, England. But rather than stop selling sweets he set up his own chocolate shop.
By the 1920s the torch had been passed to Joseph's two sons, Norman and Stanley. The brothers we’re doing a roaring trade in delicious sweet treats. Although they did make delicious chocolate truffles, their biggest seller was their famous Thorntons special toffee. Sales continued to grow for the next two decades, and by the end of World War 2 Thorntons was operating almost forty shops. The end of rationing in the United Kingdom brought greater access to higher quality sugar and cocoa from South America. The Thorntons brothers saw their chance to set up a true luxury chocolate brand, and the rest is history.
These days, Thortons has become the largest confectionery-only parent company in the UK. The company employs over 2,000 people and makes a range of brilliant confectionary products. It seems that Joseph's legacy remains in good hands!
Thorton’s products
Even the most demanding choco-holics will be satisfied by Thornton’s range of delicious chocolate morsels. Thorntons sells plenty of the three classic chocolate flavours: sweet and scrumptious milk chocolate, rich and complex dark chocolate and versatile and subtle white chocolate.
As well as the purely chocolate flavours, you’ll also find a selection of simply scrumptious chocolates with other ingredients added for a different taste. You’ll find smooth hazelnut praline, peppery mint chocolates and melt in the middle caramel sensations, plus a range of awesome Thorntons flavours influenced by classic continental chocolates. Although chocolates have developed into the core of the Thorton’s brands, sweet fans will be pleased to know that the company still produces its special toffee and fudge treats! Thorntons toffee is moreish and chewy, while their fudge melts in the mouth. Both taste absolutely divine. Just like their chocolates, Thorntons produce yummy twists on traditional fudge and toffee recipes, mixing in other flavours like vanilla, brazil nuts and treacle to suit every confectionary-fanatic!
