Looking to buy Computer Monitors?
Computer monitors are an essential piece of technology for anyone who uses a desktop PC, and highly recommended for laptop owners when working at a desk. Whether you’re a professional designer, gamer or someone who just uses their computer for everyday tasks like checking emails and browsing the internet, having the right monitor is essential.
A good monitor can help you get more out of your work or leisure time by providing reliable performance and clear visuals. Monitors come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and specifications to suit different needs and budgets. For help choosing one that's a fit for you, read our monitors buying guide.
Monitor sizes & shapes
Size is an important factor when choosing a monitor. The most common sizes are 22, 24 and 27 inches. If you’re looking for more screen real estate, you can go up to 32" monitors or even larger. Bigger monitors are great if you need to view multiple windows at once or want to enjoy movies and games in high definition. The biggest monitors are called ultrawide monitors, and we go into them in more detail in our ultrawide monitors explainer blog.
One of the most popular design trends in recent years is manufacturers adding a curve to their screen. That's because curved monitors provide a more immersive viewing experience. They offer wider viewing angles and allow for greater depth perception, making them ideal for gaming, watching movies or TV shows, or any other type of media consumption.
Additionally, curved monitors are designed to reduce strain on the eyes since they evenly distribute light across the entire screen which helps to minimise glare and eye strain. Furthermore, the curved shape of these monitors ensures that every corner of the screen is equidistant from your eyes so it’s easier to take in all the details without having to move your head around. Finally, curved monitors tend to look sleeker and more stylish than traditional flat-screen monitors.
Monitor picture quality
Resolution is also important when choosing a monitor. The higher the resolution, the sharper your images will be. Most modern monitors have resolutions between 720p (HD Ready) and 4K (Ultra HD). If you're looking for maximum detail and clarity, then 4K monitors are the way to go but they tend to be more expensive than lower resolution models. For more information on this topic, read our monitor resolutions blog.
Another important thing to consider is the type of panel technology that your monitor should use. TN (Twisted Nematic) panels are the most affordable but have limited viewing angles. {{CATEGORY_32254|IPS (In-Plane Switching) monitors}} offer superior colour accuracy and wider viewing angles, but also tend to be more expensive. VA (Vertical Alignment) panels offer better contrast ratios than both TN and IPS panels - which provides a more impressive, dramatic picture for streamed TV shows and movies - but may suffer from slower response times. You can learn more by reading our blog on monitor panel technologies.
Refresh rate is another important aspect of monitor specs. A higher refresh rate means that the image on screen will be smoother with less motion blur during fast-paced scenes in games or videos. Most modern monitors have refresh rates ranging from 60Hz to 240Hz depending on the model. Any monitor with a 144Hz refresh rate or higher is suitable for gaming.
Another important specification is response time which determines how quickly pixels can change from one colour to another. Lower response times mean less motion blur and ghosting so it's worth investing in a monitor with a low response time if you plan on gaming or watching movies. The key to a brilliant gaming monitor is high resolution and refresh rate, extremely quick response times and a curved screen.
