Dog collar FAQs

What is a dog collar?

A dog collar is a material that's placed around the neck of a dog. It can be used for identification, protection, restraint (when used with a leash) or fashion. Dog collars are usually used for identification tags and medical information.

Are collars bad for dogs?

Only if used incorrectly. To ensure the collar is both comfortable and safe for your dog, you need to make sure it's not too tight or too loose. When using a leash, don't pull it aggressively or make any sudden jerks, as this can cause injury to your dog.

Can a collar harm my dog?

If the collar is too tight, it can harm your dog. It can lead to skin irritation, hair loss and infection. In extreme cases, it can even damage their nerves. If you use a collar, make sure you're doing it correctly.

Should I get a collar or a harness?

If you use a harness, it may be easier to control and manage your dog, even if it's not properly trained. In addition to this, harnesses disperse pressure over a larger area of your dog's body, helping to reduce strain on its neck and back while discouraging pulling. However, they may be trickier to put on, particularly if your dog's not used to wearing one, and often don't come with any identification. Collars are typically kept on a dog which means that, should they slip their lead, break free out of the front door or slip through a hole in the garden, they can be easily identified and returned safely. Ultimately, it all comes down to what suits you and - importantly - your dog best.

Do dogs like having collars on?

This really varies from dog to dog. While some dogs love wearing collars, others simply can't stand having them on. You can rest assured your dog will find some way of letting you know the latter!
