Dog pen FAQs

Are dog fences and exercise pens a good idea?

Dog pens are a fantastic way to give your furry friend the freedom they need without coming home to ruined, chewed-up interiors. Playpens offer a familiar space and playground for your dog, which allows them to feel safe and have fun without exposing them to potential dangers. Dog enclosures are also a great choice if your garden isn’t secure! Generally more modular in design, playpens are flexible and versatile, allowing you to transport them around the house and garden as needed. Perfect for leaving your pups unsupervised, playpens provide protection, security and peace of mind while you’re out of the house.

Do I need a dog exercise pen or a dog crate?

Dog crates and pens offer their own uses and benefits. A playpen is a great option for puppies who love to play, as they can run around with plenty of dog toys to keep them busy, whereas crates are better for creating a safe and secure sleeping area while training puppies during the toilet training stage. Our four-legged friends love a comfy and relaxing space to settle down in, so take a look at our dog beds and blankets, perfect for making your dog’s crate feel as homely as possible. Crate covers are also an excellent choice for soothing nervous dogs whether they’re at home or travelling in the car.

Is it okay to keep my puppy in a pen?

Dog pens can be quite useful when you have puppies, particularly if you need to leave your home for work or to perform other tasks. Pens provide a flexible, safe space where you can leave your puppies unsupervised in the comfort and knowledge that they're well protected.

What are the different dog pen materials available?

The materials used to build a dog pen can affect its cost, safety, and durability in the long-run. Most pens and fences are made from either metal, plastic, or mesh, and each has its own set of advantages and drawbacks. Plastic stands in the middle of both price-point and durability, and is also (handily) suitable for indoor and outside use. In the house, plastic tends to be the first choice for puppy parents as it doesn’t scratch the floor but, that being said, it’s easier for pooches to chew out of. Metal pens are probably the most expensive choice on offer, but they’re also far higher-quality and more durable. Mesh alternatives tend to be quite flimsy, so are best suited to older dogs who are happy just to chill.

How big should a dog pen be?

This is highly dependent on your dog’s breed and size. An outdoor model should always have sides tall enough to keep your dog inside, to stop them from jumping out. A 6ft fence is usually sufficient. In an indoor pen, your dog should be able to stand up, lie down, and turn around.
