Created by one of the First Nations tribes in America, Dream Catchers have become a well-known symbol all across the world. Believed by some to ward off evil spirits or act as a good luck charm, Dream Catchers were originally thought to do just that - catch dreams. Since their creation, Dream Catchers can be found featuring many different contemporary themes and modern touches to add some personality to your home.
Where do Dream Catchers Come From?
Created by the Ojibwe tribe and shared with other Native American tribes over the years, Dream Catchers would often be made from a hoop of willow with complicated designs woven in the centre. They would often weave in all kinds of sacred items such as beads and feathers and have them trail down, believing that they would filter the good dreams through them. Parents would hang these beautiful and intricate Dream Catchers above their children’s’ beds and it was believed that the spider web design in the centre would help to filter out the bad dreams while the hanging beads and feathers would guide the good dreams down to the slumbering children. Since then, these intricate items have become popular overseas and are often associated with New Age music and a 1970’s aesthetic.
The Ojibwe people have an ancient legend about the origin of the dream catcher. Storytellers speak of the Spider Woman, known as Asibikaashi who would take care of the children and people on the land. Eventually, the Ojibwe Nation spread to the corners of North America and it became difficult for Asibikaashi to reach all the children and so, the mothers and grandmothers thought of a solution - Dream Catchers! They wove webs for children and they believed that these magical webs would protect their children from negativity and evil thoughts by filtering out all bad dreams. Soon, the magical webs became famous and are now known as Dream Catchers.
