What’s the difference between fertiliser and plant food?
Despite fertiliser and plant food often being used together in conjunction with each other and for the most part carrying out a similar purpose, they’re not actually the same thing. Fertilisers are a combination of macronutrients, micronutrients and fillers. Some fertilisers have equal amounts of the big three macronutrients which comprise of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium however others can have slightly more of one macronutrients than the others - for example an extra amount of nitrogen helps to promote foliage growth. The macronutrients and micronutrients that are included in fertilisers are essential to plant growth and ensuring your plants remain healthy. Plant food, although very similar in what it does to plants, is always naturally occurring whereas fertiliser is not. Also, plant food will be made by plants more regularly than the amount that you’ll need to use fertiliser, so only use fertiliser if you feel your plants need a big helping hand to stay healthy.
Why should I use fertiliser and plant food?
You’ll know if you need to use some fertiliser or plant food as your plants will start to show signs of malnutrition, such as pale green foliage when the nitrogen levels of your plant are low, and dark green veins on pale green leaves when the potassium amount has become minimal. Don’t worry if you start to notice these signs on your plants - it just means that the plant has used all of the natural nutrients within the soil where it was planted to create its own plant food and now needs some help from you! Use fertiliser and plant food to prolong the life of your plants and to ensure they stay healthy and thriving - here at OnBuy, we’ve got an extensive range of fertilisers to boost your plants strength, in addition to liquid plant food and organic plant food - so you’ll be covered no matter the plant you’re feeding or the soil it’s living in!
