What's the difference between a hot glue gun and a cold glue gun?
The terms can be slightly confusing, but all glue guns work by getting hot enough to melt the inserted glue sticks, and create an adhesive bond when the melted glue cools and solidifies. However, the difference is the temperature that the glue gun warms the sticks up to; hot melt glue guns get up to around 200C, which, as well as melting faster, creates a stronger bond.
Cold melt glue guns only reach around 120C, so are a little slower to melt, but this is necessary when gluing more delicate materials like clothing and fabrics to avoid damage. If you're buying a craft glue gun, low melt is the better option as you can work with a larger range of materials, whereas a hot glue gun is better for DIY, repairs, and industrial use.
What are glue guns used for?
Because they create a strong bond, glue guns have a wide range of applications. Industrial glue guns are commonly used in the manufacture of furniture, upholstery, carpentry, and more. Meanwhile, cold glue guns for crafts, which also tend to last longer because of their cooler operating temperatures, are great at gluing polystyrene, wood, leather, fabric, plastic, and rubber.
Whether you choose a hot or cold melt glue gun, be sure to check you're buying the right type of glue gun glue stick as you'll struggle to melt hot glue gun sticks in a cold melt glue gun.
