Why use hiking poles?

Hiking poles, commonly referred to as trekking poles, are a must-have item for outdoor explorers. Used to enhance stability and provide support on all types of terrain and inclines, these adventure accessories are perfect if you’re looking to venture off on backcountry expeditions – particularly useful if you’re trekking off with a backpack full of heavy equipment, such as tents and camping gear or spare Craghoppers clothes if you get wet and chilly.

If your hike requires stream crossings, hiking poles are a great way to prevent any nasty falls on the slippery rocks, providing an anchor to offer you greater support. They’re also a fantastic tool to test the depth of a stream or gauge how muddy the bottom is, so you know exactly what to expect should the worst happen and you get dunked! Similarly, if you’re hiking in snowy conditions, a hiking pole can be used as extra support to stop you from slipping and sliding on the ice or snow.

They can also be used to move wildlife or plants out of your way without putting yourself at risk or damaging nature, perfect for minimising the environmental impact of your hikes.

What are the different types of hiking poles?

There are two main hiking poles on the market today: trekking poles and hiking staffs. Trekking poles are commonly sold as a pair to be used in tandem and are designed to take the pressure off your knees and back, making them a favourite pick among adventurers carrying heavy loads. They’re usually more adjustable in length and many feature shock-absorbing internal springs to further reduce impact. Hiking staffs, also known as walking/travel staffs, are sold as a single pole, and are most effective on relatively flat terrains with little to no load on your back. Similarly to trekking poles, you can find a whole host of adjustable hiking staffs with shock-absorbing features. One of the main differences, however, is that many hiking staffs include a built-in camera mount under the handle, which allows the staff to be transformed into a monopod at will.

How do I pick the right hiking pole for my height?

Though everyone’s needs will vary slightly, as a general rule of thumb for adjustable hiking poles, you should opt for a pole with a maximum length of at least 51” if you’re taller than 6ft. If you’re shorter than 6ft, most adjustable hiking poles can be shortened to a length that suits you, giving you much more freedom of choice.

For fixed-length hiking poles, we suggest that users under 5ft. 1” grab a pole of roughly 100cm (39”), whilst those falling between the 5ft 1”-5ft. 7” bracket go for a pole of 110cm (43”), those between 5ft. 8”-5ft. 11” opt for a pole of 120cm (47”), and those taller than 6ft. grab themselves a pole of 130cm (51”).
